1985 or 1986 7.5 hp Mercury outboard Motor. The water pumps impeller was changed 2 years ago. This spring the motor cranked right up, but the tell tale was not there. Replace the impeller and the tell tale spewed water for a few seconds, when the gear shift was change into another gear, the tell tale stopped, and would not start back. All pipes, (tubing) has been checked and appear to be 'open'. It dose not appear to hold its prime and continue pumping the water through the tell tale. What could be the problem?

never,, last year, 10 years ago grandpa did.
q2, did this beast see SEA duty?
if yes, is it flashed at ever use? OOPS;.
you do know salt water wrecks it all, in the end.
thAT tell tale hole must squirt. IT IS ON THE PUMP OUTPUT;.
SO THERE IS NO OUTPUT NOW.(PUMP)
if not , (per above new parts) engine block must be dismantled
and all water jackets proved clear.
if electronic check all connections and wiring for corrosion and bad connections--possible faulty sender unit
if mechanical then check that the tube end is not blocked with mud , salt or weeds
first up replace the water pump in the shaft housing as the impeller blades will be breaking off. The rich running will be from will be from corrosion build up in the fuel system (carby -needle and seat or injectors). I suggest that you pull the side plate off the engine and check the sacrificial plate for corrosion . The plate between the water cooling and the exhaust
Really because of the risk when in use it is advisable to have it all done by accredited outboard specialists.
it is possible that the length of the leg is insufficient and the pump pick up holes are in the clean area behind the keel of the boat when at speed and on the plane
if it is a deep V boat and you have a standard length leg for the outboard , that would be worth checking
The ford taurus and mercury sable are very well know to have coolant pressure, heat problems. I have worked on a minimum of 300 of these specific vehicles in my career, I can tell you the system is a headache, yet manageable. Are you getting cold air through the vents? is the blower motor working?
Is your antifreeze brown in color or goo like? (a tell tale sign of a broken water pump and 90% probability of a clogged heater core.
also other basics, have you flushed the system and checked to make sure the car is not air bound?
mcdevito75 Here, If I;m not mistaken the water pump is in the lower houseing, a big job, let the marina take care of it as the water pump should be Changed only if it doesn"t pump at all.
I would start with cleaning water intake and if you haven't re placed water pump impeller in last two years would do so now ,before you lose a weekend off the water,Hope this helped .
Just an idea but your water pump is only rubber and setting for the winter it didnt stick to the sides of where it pumps did it.. sometimes these pumps are tempermental.. you might check your water pump again making sure its pumping right.. is it peeing out the sides good like it is suppose to ? also if its getting hot on top it makes me think the pump is not doing its job right maybe just pumping some.. not enough? just a thought .. thanks Jerry
the drive shaft goes down through the water pump impeller and I suspect that the problem will be in the pump
the impeller is rubber and if run dry will melt the rubber into the housing and bind up the shaft
Brute force is a last resort so get all the information you can from a service dealer mechanic
