I was given a 1981 Ford pick-up F100, it has a 390 engine which I think was put in for extra power in towing. Any ideas on what might have been the orignal motor and do I have to swap transmissions?

Capacity towing

How much do you think a 2-door hatchback could handle when towing in Mt Gilead? I might have to tow a small trailer to the dump and I don't know anyone who'd let me borrow a bigger car.

Can I put a 1981 ford f-150 motor in a 1991 ford f-150 truck

Sounds to me like you opened a can of worms that you are not equipped/qualified to deal with. To begin with, doing an engine change the way you did it is illegal. It is OK to put the newer motor in the older vehicle, but it is against federal law to put the older engine into the newer vehicle. REFERENCE: EPA ENGINE SWAP FACT SHEET

With all that said, if you want to do a swap like that, it is necessary to also swap wiring harnesses and computer modules (among several other components) if you expect it to work.

1981 ford ranger pick up turn signals only work when truck is off, but when running the turn signals wont work how can i fix this?

could be a bad ground. an easy way to check would be to connect jumper cable from engine to cab, and also connect jumper cable from engine to frame. start truck turn on turn signal, if they work then install new bonding straps.

Clutch pedal fails to return fully after depressing.

If your truck has a hydraulic clutch it will have an extra reservoir, near the brake fluid reservoir, and the clutch side uses brake fluid also. Your problem I think, is that you are low on fluid. That can cause the problem you describe. Look for this extra reservoir and check it for low fluid, it may be dirty but should have full / low mark on the side.

Towing capacity of a Ford 250 5.8 L engine

Towing capacity for any vehicle depends on the engine size along with tire size. the towing capacity should be on the ID tag on the driver's side door and will also be in the owner's manual.

1981 ford fairmont electrical

Looks like you have replaced all of the key parts, and then some. At this point I would verify that the alternator is charging the battery. With engine off, check battery voltage. Start the engine and check thre voltage again. It should climb to charging voltage, around 13.0 to 13.5 volts. If it doesn't, check all connections. On a vehicle this old, I would start with the ground circuits.
Good luck.
