Water Pump

CAUTION Never open, service, or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. In addition, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.0L Engine
Two electric engine coolant pumps are used in conjunction with the belt driven mechanical pump. The electric pump mounted on the passenger side strut tower, assists the flow of warm coolant to the heater core at idle when ambient temperature is low. This pump runs at all times with the engine on. A failure with this pump would result in poor heating performance especially at idle. The second electric pump is mounted on the driver's side of the radiator, which provides additional flow of coolant through the radiator. This pump is energized when coolant temperatures reach 194° F (90° C).
The mechanical engine water pump, driven by the serpentine drive belt, provides a constant flow of coolant through the engine at all times while the engine is running.

First of all,you will need the Northstar waterpump removal tool, You can get this from most reputable auto part stores.

You need to remove the air filter housing and ducting to gain easy access to the pump.

Remove the shield covering the pulley and belt. The belt is easily removed by levering the tensioner pulley.

The water pump is located at the lower radiator hose manifold where you will also find the thermostat.Remove the manifold cover and you will see the water pump.

Insert the removal tool over the pump making sure it is locked in position. You will need to use a breaker bar on the removal tool and turn the tool CLOCKWISE to release the pump (1/4 turn), or if you imagine the breaker bar being vertical, push towards the windscreen of your car,it takes quite a bit of force to unseat the pump hence the use of a breaker bar.

Installing the new pump does not require as much torque as removing the old one.
Tighten the new pump to 73 ft.lbs. making sure it is seated properly before tightening.

Don't forget to clean out the water pump housing prior to installing the new pump and don't forget to include a new water pump gasket and housing cover gasket.

It is also a good idea to install a new thermostat while you're at it.

Where is water pump fuse located

If your water pump has failed you will simply just have to change it.It does not have a fuse and a rule of thumb is change the water pump when you change the timing belt at 60000 which is the correct interval to change the timing belt and you already have easy access to change the water pump also.

2000 FORD EXPEDITION OVERHEATING....changed thermostat, radiator cap, confirmed fan clutch is working, no radiator leak noted, changing coolant temperature sensor as a type...water pump not leaking or...

yes. the impellor on these engines have a tendency to come off the water pump.First you can see if the pump is working by removing a heater hose then have someone to start the engine. if the water sprays a good, solid stream out then the water pump is good. if the water just barely comes out or not at all then the pump is weak or "bad".

I have a 2003 pontiac grandam with a intake gasket leak. I am planning to have it fixed but i have advised to change the water pump also. I am having no water pump problems is that advisable to do.

CHANGE WATER PUMP WILL SAVE YOU SOME MONEY, TO CHANGE INTAKE GASKET HAVE TO DISAMBLE PART OF YOUR ENGINE , AND IF YOU NEVER HAVE CHANGED YOUR WATER PUMP IT WIL PREBENT FUTURE PROBLEMS. BUT DOESN'T MEANS THAT YOU NEED TO CHANGE WATER PUMP.

Do you have to change the water pump when changing the timing belt/timing?

You don't have too, but not bad idea, the timing belt drives the water pump, if you just replace timing belt, and not water pump, water pump could go out and mess up the timing belt, now it has to be done all over again, timing belt, water pump and labor.

2003 kia rio- water pumps

I would follow the mechanics recommedations. I think he's taliking about the cam and crankshaft seals. Yes the water pump should be replaced as well. The pump that sprays windshield washer fluid onto the windshield is called the windshield washer pump. The water pump is on the engine and pumps water (coolant/antifreeze) through the engine to the radiator and heater core.

Do I change water pump when having timing belt changed

I would go to auto zone and get a diagram and the timing belt and do it yourself and the water pump (no it does not have to be changed everytime the timing belt is changed but if the car has over 60,000miles then it is best to change them both) it is not that hard especially if the car is not out of time just make sure you disconnect the negative side of the battery

How to change a water pump on a 1999 Buick Century 3100?

the water pump on the 3.1 isnt to hard to change ...
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Partially drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Remove the drive belt guard.
  4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts before removing the drive belt. This should help keep the pulley from turning as the bolts are loosened.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.
  6. Remove the water pump bolts and separate the pump from the engine front cover.
