Question about 1999 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

My KIA Sportage has lots of loose play in the steering and tends to wander at high speed. Has been checked by mechanic and re-aligned. Mechanic says I've been spoilt by rack and pinion steering and just have to get used to it. Any ideas on a good step by step strategy to check.

FIND ANOTHER MECHANIC!!!!!!!! No REAL mechanic would tell you that. Your steering should have NO play in it. (Over time a little) Have your steering box checked

Steering wandering had ball joints track rod ends done for mot last couple of years tracking been done cars wanders when driving quite scary

There are many reasons for wandering, I should highly recommend you do some serious looking before you drive any trips, or any higher speeds until you have the front end checked by a reputable mechanic (one highly recommended.)
Here are some reasons for wandering.
1) A bad tire (the tire can look fine, but be bad.)
2) A bad "front end alignment".
This is repairable, but good shops will not fix it until and unless the whole "front end of the car" is in good order.
3) A worn component in the "front end".
God bless your efforts.

2000 kia sportage - shudder / vibation when braking, happens very infrequent. brakes checked twice by mechanic, stated cheap pads but still plenty left !

When you say brakes checked by mechanic, I trust he has done the following:

-Spun the rotor around with a dial gauge against it to measure runout

-Measured the thickness of the rotor to ensure all is in spec

-Checked that there is no wheel bearing play or worn associated steering components

-Inspected the caliper slides and pad holder section for anything not as per normal

-visually inspected the rotors for hot spots/uneven surface appearance ( I have seen rotors where the hardness of the metal has varied across the surface)

-Checked wheel alignment and balance - rare for this to be a cause, but when combined with one of the above issues, can be a significant contributing factor

I have 97 chinok motorhome on e350 chasis. have replaced all 4ball joints, new shocks, front end inspected, new steering stabilizer, new tires but still hve a wander in steering. would any one have any ideas?...

You said that you had the front end inspected so I assume that all 4 tie rod ends are good and the front end was aligned. Changing parts without re-alignment can create a wandering condition. If that is the case then your problem could be play in the steering box, which should have some adjustment. You should also check the bushings in your control arms. They are rubber and will deteriorate over time, creating excessive play in the front end. Hope this helps.

Wandering steering on Isuzu Bighorn

Why, of course, Get an alignment because your front end is too much in the positive caster. Don't let anyone tell you it's the nature of the beast. Good Luck. Ask for the before and after settings to be put on your receipt._Ned_

Extremely loose (sloppy) steering

Have you had the front end alignment checked?
If the alignment is ok you might have your mechanic check the steering box.
