What is the normal operating engine temperature that should be showing on the gauge inside the car? It is a 2004 Chevy Cavalier LS 4 door sedan. It has 97,500 miles on car. The needle creeps a little above the midway line on gauge. Thank you.

As the guages in cars are only a guide, anywhere between 10 and 2 oclock is fine.if it were overheating you would lose power.

Check coolant levels to ensure they are full. Check for coolant leaks.

What you describe could be considered normal if you are driving in hot ambient temperatures with full coolants levels. Ensure you are using coolant liquid not water.

If fluid levels are full (rad and overflow bottle) and there are no leaks and the temperature gauge is not show engine it running hot; then the sensor that controls the fan(s) should be replaced.

Hi Bajil, Have a diagnostic scan carried out and have the coolant temperature sensor and relay inspected for correct operation. It sounds as if a cable has become disconnected or that the operating circuit has become defective. The cooling circuit operation is correct when the fan operates when the engine temperature raises a fraction above normal. The fan will run for a number of seconds and then switch off, thereby maintaining the 'normal' operating temperature. Regards John

No heat in 2000 chevy cavalier

First verify the engine is reaching proper temperature, if it is you have a problem with the ait temperature control blend door. Have a shop verify this is the problem as the repair is about $800.00

1997 2.4L Chevy Cavalier LS; Low Coolant Indicator and Temp Gauge

take the cap off of the radiator (whil engine is cold) start and run the vehicle. keep runnig 30mins after the vehicle is hot keeping notice of the rad fluid level.
keeping the cap off will prevent the pressure build up that woiuld keep the air in the system, keep adding water or antifreeze as the level goes down. this may take an hour or so.
also with the cap off, you will be able to see if your water pump is operating correctly. you will visibly be able to see movement in the rad when the pum is engaged.
