You have to carefully remove the inner door trim, disconnect the airbags and then remove the weather stripping. There are some obvious nuts/bolts & clips that you will see.

Its inside your car manual on the left side as you open it up, it'll be a lil grey card that will have the radio code written on it... read the manual and it'll tell you how to put the numbers in.

1. Lock doors via key on Driver's door.2. Disconnect battery.3. Wait a couple minutes to let remaining voltage leak out of system.4. Reconnect battery.5. Unlock doors via key on Driver's door.

I'm not 100%, but it could be a dodgy contact, on the button, which engages/disengages, as you open and shut the door.
Make sure that they all move freely, and aren't missing any pieces.

From what you describe, it sounds like someone tried to slim-jim the door lock and dislocated the metal rod from the lock cylinder mechanism. There are two rods; one to the lock mechanism, and the other to the interior pop-up lock shaft. If the interior lock shaft is going up and down, but the door is not locking and unlocking, the rod to the lock cylinder/mechanism has fallen off (this is very common when someone tries to slim-jim the door for entry). To repair requires the interior door panel to be removed and the rod to be reinserted back into the small L-shaped plastic clip.

Usually after removing any interior trim, there's a slide clip holding the assy. to the lid.
