do you know where the whining sound is coming from? I would start with checking your fluid levels on your transmission and power steering.

Sounds like it may be low of power steering fluid.

this could be one of a few problems.
1 it could be that your belt or one of the pullies is going out.
2 it also it could be the transmission. with the rpm's going up with the wine i would check the transmission fluid. this sounds like it could be low on fluid.

A transmission problem would not make the steering wheel vibrate. Have you ever had the Transfer Case fluid changed? This is required every 50K miles. A qualified transmission technician should evaluate your problem.

Check voltage to the coil pack and if not replace it or your igniton switch could be bad. The car will not run on 3 cylinders so if the coil pack is pack is bad it will not run!!

either a bad trans pump or a bad power steering pump turn the steering wheel and see if it gets louder

Should be under warranty from the $2800 repair...take it back

This is most likely caused by the power steering pump, use a wooden dowel and put it against the pump body, this will amplify the noise and allow you to pinpoint the exact location, if it is not the pump check around the engine for the source, be careful!

The whine sounds like the power steering or the alternator, as far as the idle issue goes try this clean the intake throttle body and idle speed control valve with carb spray, disconnect battery for 5 min. then reconnect and drive a few miles to reset idle strategy. The car will try to die when you spray the intake, hold the idle up to prevent that, use at least 1/2 the can of carb spray.
