The backup lamps will light whenever the ignition switch is in the RUNposition and the transaxle is in REVERSE. On older vehicles, this function was handled by a dedicated switch with a name such as the Neutral/Safety Backup Light Switch, or something similar. This switch was designed to keep the engine from starting in any gear except PARK and/or NEUTRAL. The switch contacts also activated the backup lights when the transaxle was placed in REVERSE.

On the vehicles covered by this manual, the backup lamp control function is part of an integrated switch called the Transaxle Range switch (sometimes also called the Park/Neutral Position or PNP switch). In addition to turning on the backup lights, the Transaxle Range switches primary function is to transmit to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) the driver's transaxle range selection. The PCM uses this information to control both engine and transaxle functions electronically.

The Transaxle Range switch is mounted externally on the transaxle. New service replacement switches come pinned in the NEUTRAL position and no adjustment should be necessary. Please note that if the switch requires adjustment, GM recommends that their special tool J 41545 Park/Neutral Switch Alignment Tool be used to properly adjust the Transaxle Range switch, if required.

Removal & Installation

1. Apply the parking brake and block the front wheels.
2. Place the transaxle gear selector to NEUTRAL.
3. Remove the air intake duct to access the switch located on the top of the transaxle at the range selector cable and arm.
4. Disconnect the transaxle range selector cable.
5. Detach the electrical connectors from the range selector switch.
6. Remove the range selector lever retaining nut and lift off the lever.
7. Unfasten the range selector switch mounting bolts, then remove the switch from the transaxle manual shaft.

the "check transaxle light," and it's to alert you that your transmission has issues that need to be addressed asap. From what I understand, if the issue is serious, the transaxle (transmission) is probably going to lock into second gear at some point for safety purposes. As fate would have it, there is no real middle ground for repair of these problems. You are God-blessed if there's a faulty sensor cause, which is possible, but unlikely. When transaxle issues occur on these vehicles, 99% of all remedies from dealers or tranny shops would require removal of the transaxle to perform the repair.

Check transaxle

Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position.

Illumination of this light indicates that a problem has been detected and shifting may be restricted.

If this lamp remains on, have your vehicle serviced immediately.

Back-up Light Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Cabriolet On the Cabriolet, the back-up light switch is mounted in one of three positions: screwed into the front face of the transaxle beside the oil filler plug, screwed into the top of the transaxle case to the left of the shift linkage, or mounted as a microswitch on top of the transaxle with a lever that is activated by the external shift linkage. Fox The Fox back-up light switch is screwed into the rear of the transaxle housing. Simply unscrew it from the housing to remove or replace. 1990 — 92 Golf and Jetta The back-up light switch includes the fifth gear switch used by the up-shift light. It is mounted to the selector shaft housing on top of the transaxle, secured with 2 bolts and sealed with an O-ring.

1. Make sure the transaxle is in neutral.
2. Disconnect the wiring and remove the bolts to remove the switch. Be careful not to loose the O-ring or bolt bushings.
3. Fit the bushings and O-ring onto the switch and install it onto the transaxle. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) and connect the wiring.

1995 — 99 Cabrio, 1993–99 Golf and Jetta

1. Remove the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the electrical connector.
3. Unscrew the switch using a wrench to break it loose.
4. Remove the back up light switch from the housing.
5. Keep the O-ring. To install:

I had and identical problem on my 2002 Focus I also just had the alternator replaced I found my positive lead from the Battery to the starter bad it was melted by the terminal end I raplaced the wire loom that it was in (Ford part WC-95725,YS4Z-14301-LB) and so far that has fixed the problem (only been a week) I hope this helps

The neutral start/back-up light switch is at fault. the swich is located on the lower front edge of transaxle. To replace the switch put a drain pan under the transaxle and remove the switch. Some fluid will come out of the transaxle during removal. Install in the reverse of removal. Refill transaxle to proper level before driving. Hope this will help you.

the pcm prolly has picked up a problem with the transaxle, pcm puts the transaxle in "limp mode" which will keep it n 2nd or 3rd depending on the programing try checking the codes to see if it has speed sensor or solonoid failure codes. clear them, n c how long it takes to come back
