I had the same on my 3.8L 2002 Impala. Right arround 3500-4000rpms with moderate to high acceleration; shaking and bucking. With light acceleration, it seemed OK. And no "check engine" light.
It was the MAF sensor. I ended up replacing it, but it was pretty expensive $150+?
You might try cleaning yours first with MAF spray cleaner.

It is located on the throttle body under the engine cover.

I was working on the a/c so some other parts were removed.

I can't remember for sure, but you might need some special tamper proof Torx drive sockets to remove the two bolts. Or you'll have to have a decent set of vise grips to loosen and maybe a small flat screw driver will get it out.

Have a 2000 impala about half thardle it start braking up

Check the distributor cap for a crack running vertically. If it has a crack, and you accelerate the cap spreads open and loses timing and sputters.

crank sensor failing, still reading signal but sporadically. can also help if you replace cam and crank sensors at same time.
