Overdrive is electrically controlled by the pcm. When it's cold you need to check to see if the pcm is grounding the overdrive solenoid. If it is the solenoid might be bad or if the pcm is not grounding it then you need to check items that would cause the pcm to lock out overdrive. Coolant temp, TPS, Vehicle speed sensor, ECT. You will have to have it scanned to do this.

This is a normal condition, the nag transmission control module needs to see a certain temperature of the fluid before shifting into overdrive this is due to fluid viscosity, if the fluid is too thick
due to cold temps the pump cannot supply enough pressure to fully engage
the overdrive clutch, if it did you would have slippage in overdrive

Not supposed to shift into overdrive until the engine is warmed up and trans fluid reaches a certain temp. Accelerating in overdrive on a cold engine or cold transmission results in high emissions. so they lock it out until temps increae

Can a bad thermostat cause a transmission not to shift properly in a 2002 chevy impala?

It is absolutely possible for this to be the case. When the thermostat is not reading the temperature of the coolant properly, the engine ECU or computer will sometimes not allow the transmission to shift either correctly or at all. I have a ford ranger that will not shift into overdrive on cold days until the engine has gotten up to a warmer temperature. This is because the ECU is limiting the transmission from shifting into overdrive while the thermostat is still registering cold temperatures. Now if the transmission is shifting rough or randomly, that could be another problem like a shift solenoid inside the transmission. But as far as your original question, yes a bad thermostat can definitely be a possible reason for a transmission not shifting "normally". Hope this helps.

1990 f150 automatic with overdrive shifts only at high rpms

Kinda sounds like it works when fluid is thick and not after it warms up. If it has been awhile since trans fluid and filter were changed it is the most simple thing to change. The torque converter is a big pump, it may be going and not providing enough pressure. This could be checked on most transmissions by a shop expert. Sometimes pressure can be adjusted externally.

You may have a case of morning sickness. in a transmission they are seals the are bad and leak fluid past them. causing a shifting problem when cold as fluid warms up seals swell and your pressures increase allowing a better shift.

Overdrive dosen't shift in.

Make sure u have a good thermostat in it. The engine temp must be at certain temp then a signal is sent to the transmission so it will shift into overdrive. Bought my 4 runner,91, was shifting fine until started getting cold then stopped all of a sudden. Checked the thermostat and it was in but had been gutted which allowed the engine not to warm up sufficient to allow the trans to shift into overdrive. Changed thermostat about $8, hasn't skipped a beat since.

Shifting problems

The transmission/computer is designed not to go into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp and I don't remember what the temp is. Mine does same thing and it has 250,000 miles on it. When you start your truck up do you start it and warm up in neutral? The transmission fluid won't flow unless it is. There is know way to force it to shift into overdrive until it warms to the set temp.

Hope this helps
