TDI 02 1.9 Jetta smoking and runs rough it sat for 7 years

When the engine sets, moisture can build up in the cylinders, causing rough walls and blow by past the rings. also seals can dry out allowing fluid and gasses to pass through? Fortunately, usually when you run it for a while it'll clear up. How long did you try to run it? Also if you have the same gas in it, that could cause a lot of smoke.

My Jetta is not a TDI....My car is dying when I come to a stop. It will start right back up. It also shows the battery warning light. Would this be the battery or alternator?

It is possible.

When at idle the RPMs drop as the engine slows. This results in the alternator slowing. If it is failing or you have a problem with the charging system it can cause the car to die.

Usually however with a charge failure it will not start back again easily.

Try checking under full load. Run all electrical systems radio, heater, lights etc at idle. If you see the lights start to fade and the engine dies it is likely the charging system.

Most likely the alternator or part of the regulating system.

You can have the alternator tested or you can do it yourself.

Connect at voltage tester to the terminals on the alternator. Run the engine and measure the output. It should read as per the indications on the alternator. There is a sticker on the alternator telling you the output.

Start there.

Hope this helped. Please rate if this helps you.

Jetta tdi 2007 running rough on start up at times. blowing excessive amounts of smoke from exhaust at times. poor idle at times feels like running on three and a half cylinders, takes a few seconds too...

You may want to check the ignition system. The smoke could be because of unburnt fuel. You may be running on less then 4 cylinders. Check if all spark plugs are firing. You may also want to use a scanner if there are error codes found in its ECU.

Traction control light

fuel filter can be getting gelled up, ecm has to be checked or could have a loose connector in engine compartment or broken wires. many times fuel pump relay or main relay will cause weird things in these cars
