I have run into this problem on a friends' eclipse.I found the main relay/fuel pump relay assembly to be defective. My car would not start at times, then be fine if I tried it 15 min. later. See if the check engine light comes on when you turn the ignition to"run"If it doesn't I'll condemn the relay. It is located in the console, below and to the right side of the radio.

My 96 Accord won't start. Replaced rotor, distributor cap, wires & plugs. Ran great this morning. Started up a lunch. Now, (about 4pm) it cranks; but, won't start.

You will have to determine if it is fuel related or electrical.......Try checking a spark plug wire with a spark plug grounded to the engine....spark should be present....If spark is present, try turning the ignition switch on an listen for momentary fuel pump run.....Turn off and on at least 3 times for start prime....Then try cranking......if no start, most likely a fuel pump problem...Depress fuel pressure port fitting for presence of fuel...be careful of the fuel pressure fitting a fire hazard exist....have a fire extinguisher handy when working with fuel components.......

Engine won't fire

There are a lot of potential causes for your problem. The pattern is similar to a fuel pump failure I had in a 1992 Buick, but before embarking on a fuel pump replacement, there are a few tests you can do.

Check fuel pump operation: Open the fuel filler cap and listen to it while an assistant turns the key to the "On" position. If the fuel pump is working you should hear it running clearly by listening to the top of the fuel filler tube. The reason you need an assistant to turn on the key is that if it's working correctly, your fuel pump will only run for a few seconds.

Check ignition system (only applicable to gasoline engine): Remove one spark plug (doesn't matter which) and connect the plug wire to it. Place the plug in a secure location on the engine touching something metal and away from explosive vapors (that can come from the battery or blow out the now open spark-plug hole) Stand back where you can see the plug clearly and ask your assistant to crank the engine (turn the key to "start") If the ignition system is working properly you should see sparks jump between the contacts on the spark plug. This test is best performed in low light so the sparks are more easily seen.

My truck is turning over just fine but isn't starting. Where do I start? Spark plugs? Fuel Pump?

Spray some starting fluid into the intake and try to start it. If it fires up for a few seconds then you have a fuel problem and is most likely the fuel pump. If it does not fire up at all then you are getting no spark to your spark plugs and the 1st place I would start with that is the ignition coil.

Engine tries to turn over but won't fire

won't fire mean won't run or no-spark at the plugs?
check for spark at the plugs, check for fuel pressure
check all fuses.
if no fuel then check fuel pump
if no spark then check ignition coil, wires and connectors, if ok then you may need a distributor

Car turns over but won't crank. spark plugs are

Turning over and cranking are often the same thing, so Im not sure what your asking... Do you mean the car turns over but wont fire, or start? If thats the case and as you say the plugs are getting spark, then your problem is gonna be the fuel pump 99% of the time... Try this little trick, have a friend hit the fuel tank from under the car with a NON metalic hammer (ie a rubber or wooden mallet or chunk of solid wood etc) while your trying to start the engine. If the car fires up, then dont risk doing that trick again as it probably wont work twice, and get it to your mechanic to get a new fuel pump installed. If it doesnt work, (it really is a 50/50 thing) then get it towed and have the fuel pump changed as its still probably the problem...

Car dies intermittantly like no fuel or fire - car cools down and restarts

Need to know make and model, but do these tests: Run the car until it dies. Pop hood, pull one plug wire off of a spark plug, place an old but working spark plug in the connector, lay the spark plug on any metal. Have someone crank car. Do you see a spark? If so, then ignition working. Most likely cause of a car that dies with a working ignition system is the fuel pump system.
Pump working? Do this test: With car that just died, turn key off. Turn key on again (not to start, just to "on"). Do you hear the faint hum of the fuel pump? (I'm assuming your car is fuel injected. Carbureted - just check the ignition as above.) If so, then it could be any of the sensors. Run the engine codes. You should find something. If you DON'T hear the pump run for about 5-7 seconds then shut off automatically, then it is either your pump or the pump relay. Get those looked at.

F150 won't start

So you turned the key just to "Run" and hear the fuel pump running (guessing elec pump)? Did you pull off a spark plug wire to check for spark? If no spark, pull the Distributor cap and check inside of cap, and rotor for damage, if ok, then the coil is bad, replace it. If you have spark at the plugs, have you tried Starting Fluid? (old school, go to AutoZone for this)
