I changed the solenoid in my 97 ford explorer and now the starter wont disenguage wne i start the truck. i might have the wiring wrong. is there a diagram of the solenoid wiring?

first off make sure the battery connections are good and clean,then there is a solenoid on the fender by the battery ,these go bad you can test it by removing the little wire that slides over the small terminal and touch a screwdriver between this little terminal and the positive terminal next to it on the solenoid this will engage the starter motor,if it does then your solenoid is bad ,there are plenty of utube vidieos so u can see what im talking about if your not sure
You said you replaced the battery cables, how come? Problems getting car started? might be a bad starter, not cables... if battery is good, cables are new, may be starter solenoid malfunction... the solenoid tells the starter gear to engage the flywheel, then release the flywheel once the engine rotates fast enough (assuming you let go of the key once engine gets going :)... or you could even have a worn ignition switch or faulty wire behind the switch (not so likely)
A test light is better for basic testing(puts a load on the circuit).You should be able to get a light on the small solenoid wire when the key is turned to "start".If the light comes on,and shorting across the large terminals cranks the starter,the solenoid is the problem.(pretty common cause).
Alternator just charges your battery and wont have any direct link to a starter problem. It is very important that starter wires be very snug when replacing the starter. especially the big wires. However it is the little wire that activates the main relay. I don't remember if this car has a remote solenoid or not. If it has a remote solenoid then the main positive wire from the battery will go to the solenoid mounted on the fire wall or fender and then one big wire will go down to the starter. The start solenoid will have the battery wires hooked to it but also a little wire from the ignition switch. If you dont hear a click then either the ignition switch is bad or the solenoid is bad. Or perhaps the contact from the ignition at the solenoid is bad.
Before you go changing out the starter check for a burnt out fusible link going to the starter it will look like a wire but acts as a fuse and they burn in two just like a fuse. The symptoms you just describe are those of a burnt fusible link.
if it turns over from below,then its in the ignition switch and this also feeds power to the e.c.m. to make the engine fire so you either have a bad switch contact or the hot 12 volt wire to the ignition switch
