Exhaust issue 2002 Xterra developed a rattle. Looking under the truck, there appears to be a metal mesh basket type thing in the ehaust midbody. There is a ring that is loose around the pipe just after this mesh cylinder. Thoughts?

Most likely the heat shield has corroded off and is just sitting on top of the muffler or Catalytic converter. Regardless you can remove the shield and still run the the Xterra without any problems, the OEM muffler came with a heat shield as to the after market mufflers don't have one. The Catalytic converter also has a shield and you can remove it also as the Xterra has a heat shield on the floor board it self. Most exhaust shop if honest will tell you to just remove the rattling shield if there is no exhaust leaks or no Check engine light on that monitor's the Catalytic converter's performance.
A muffler shop if shady may advise you to replace the Catalytic converter and that can go for up to and beyond $400.00, so as long as there is no leaks or check engine light on. Go right ahead and remove the rattling shield.

Rattling noise when I press the gas pedal or when the vehicle is running idle.

Hi,
Likely an exhaust heat shield. When the SUV is cold - after sitting for 4+ hours - crawl under the vehicle and see if any of the shields are loose that cover the exhaust pipes. If they are you can use sheet metal screws screwed into the shield and against the exhaust pipeto 'wedge' the shield so it doesn't move.

My Cady has developed a rattling noise under that increases when I accelated

A common cause for the "rattling" noise you've described is a loose heat shield for the catalytic converter. Many times, a weld will break loose leaving you with a hanging heat shield that vibrates and "rattles" while you drive. A trip to the muffler shop should be able to confirm this. By itself, a loose heat shield is not something major.

Another cause could be a loose exhaust hanger that holds the exhaust firmly in place. It too would tend to rattle more as you drive. Either way, it would appear on the surface that your issue is exhaust related. Best of luck and thank you for using Fixya!

As am driving and I accelarate I hear a rattle under the car and then goes away. What can that be? Thanks!

check to see if an exhaust hanger has broke.Grab exhaust (when cool) and shake see if you can replicate the sound by shaking exhaust. If not ehaust cv axle shaft could be going bad,try turning while acceerating at a low speed if sound is heard then its the axle shaft. Also if equiped with drive shaft the universal joint could be bad.

Exhaust issue

My 2002 xterra just developed the same problem. I have 2 of those loose metal rings. One on each side of that mesh basket thing. Did you find anything out? I was thinking of just cutting them off.

Rattling sound from the exhaust

The metal shielding around your catalytic converter could be rattling or the rubber donut that holds the rear tailpipe could be bad. When your car is cold shake your tailpipe and see if you can reproduce the noise. If you can your tailpipe donut is likely bad. Three dollars at any auto parts store. If it does rattle when you shake your tailpipe then the heat shield for your convert could be loose. You need to tighten it up another piece of metal between it and the converter to keep it from rattling. If you hear the rattle when you go over bumps too then your exhuast is probably, loose. Crawl under there and stake shaking things, I am sure you'll find the problem

The noise is a rattle or thump. metal on metal..

It is hard to say what is going on back there without seeing it. The only thing I can think is the anti sway bar, It must be crunching in the joint, or come apart. It is a big heavy bar , about 1 inch dia, that goes across the back of the car and bolts to the rear end, and the body, it stops the car from tipping over, if one side goes up too high, it will pull itself back down. The other thing would be the rear wheels out of balance. Those are some things I would be looking at, and checking under there for something loose. Hope this helps.

Accelarating from 25 to 40 MPH - a "rattle" in exhaust system

Had my y-pipe replaced (bad cats) and the bolts at the y-pipe flange where it attaches to the exhaust manifolds started to get loose and I go tthe viberating (tinning) noise. Took it in the first time and they tightened everything up but it seems it's doing it again so I'm going to try to fix on my own. Just wondering how much of a pain it's going to be to get to the bolts and what size...

"Metal" rattle on 04 Tahoe

It sounds like one or both of your heat shields have come loose. If you look right where the exhaust bolts to the engine blocks on either side of the motor there should be a shiny (in comparison to the exhaust) piece of metal that has come loose.

A rattling noise

I had rattling noises as well (over bumps and when I reved the engine) and it turned out to be the heat shields under the car. I took out 2 heat shields covering the two cats on both sides AND two rusted out dangling rings hanging from the exhaust coupler (have NO clue what they were for)..This has TOTALLY gotten rid of the rattling noise. Good luck!
