I have a 2000 lincoln ls v8. the check engine light came on while driving today. when stopped at an idle it is idling rough there is also a sound when giving it gas. also while driving the check engine light started blinking and it was kind of sputtering

Sounds like low ATF. Check your transmission fluid.

Pull the MAF sensor and give it a cleaning the correct way.Sometimes something shorts those probes(tiny wires and delicate) and your engine will cut a shine on you.
Look up how to clean the MAF sensor if you don't know how. don-ohio

codes keep popping up..sounds like wrong fuel type..try a higher octane fuel for a bit..

Generally speaking, the common reasons for stalling are a faulty idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body.
The computer controls idle speed by how much air is allowed into the intake thru the throttle body.
Those two issues would be checked first.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ?

Coil on plug could be bad, alternator could have internal short, or your Idle air control valve could need to be replaced.

You can get an ACTRON scanner from Sears. The regular or plus version ($179). Harbor Freight sells scanners too.
But, you can go to AUtozone or most other stores and get the codes read for free when the CEL is on.
Get codes, report back before buying anything.
Sometimes codes are caused by other engine problems that influence the sensors and turn the light on.

The rough idle will usually be a misfire code.

I checked for TSBs. None found for 3.9L engine

a manifold leak ,dry-rotted vacuum lines also contribute to high rpm ....is there any visible signs of gasoline on the ground try using a piece of cardboard to see if any fluid gets on it also open the hood and check for visible leaks or missing cracked vacuum lines etc but sounds like a vacuum leak

I would take it to someone with an obd tester and see what codes they pull.

Is a check engine light on?

Who replaced the two coils and did they use genuine Lincoln Parts?
You can open up a whole new can of worms using some types of aftermarket coils.
These cars have tons of electronics in them and some aftermarket coils don't mesh well with the original electronics causing other electrical anomalies.

That is normal.
If you rev it in park it will not rev over 3500 rpm before it hits the rev limiter.
