Tail light replacement is not as hard as it seems.
Tools needed:flat head screwdriver and a deep 5/32 socket(a pair of pliers will work).
Step 1: open trunk and pull back truck liner at tail light. There is a small button clip on liner.Use screwdriver to pop up the center of button clip, pull clip out of hole.
Step 2:You will see a black wire attached to the body of car with 2 white clips.Use screwdriver to pop clips off of studs.
Step 3:Remove the nuts from the studs and pull tail light assembly straight back away from car.The outer side of the light just snaps in and out of place.
Step 4:Turn light socket counter clockwise 1/3 turn and pull out.
Step 5:Pull bad bulb straight out and replace.Reverse steps to reassemble.

SOURCE: removing tail light

Drop the tailgate - there are two torx style bolts holding the lens assembly in place. Remove both, then with some gentle force, pull the lens assembly straight back(there are two self seating plastic bolts that hold the assembly into the truck frame, towards the cab).

Once undone, there is a strip of three bulbs on one wired base, and that base is screwed to the lens assembly (4 phillips screws). Unscrew those, and the lens assembly is free from the base. You can then remove the bulbs, insert new ones, and reverse the process. Good luck.

SOURCE: Replacing bulbs in tail lights in a Town and Country.

  1. Open your tailgate.
  2. Look for two (2) round flat black discs about the size of a dime (but thicker) on the inside of the body (between the red lens and the weather striping).
  3. Using a pair of pliers, pull out each of these two discs.
    • Note they are in tight and may require a fair bit of force to remove.
  4. Make sure the inner part of the disc also comes out. There are two parts to this system, a grommet and a plug:
    1. Push the plug backwards through the grommet.
      • The grommet fits into the actual hole in the body, and is spread by the plug, the pressure holding them in place.
    2. Carefully remove both grommet and plug.
      • The lens assembly will fall away from the vehicle when you pull out the second grommet so be careful.
  5. Note the wiring harness that connects to a plug inside. Beside that plug are two holders for the actual bulbs.
  6. Remove the holder by pressing the sides inwards and pulling. The light socket should come out.

Tail light bulb

There are removable covers inside both sides of the hatch. You will need to gently pry them back with a flathead screwdriver wrapped in a cloth, to expose the two bolts that hold the tail light assembly to the vehicle. Then remove the two bolts, pull the assembly away so you can reach the bulb socket, turn it counter clockwise and pull the socket assembly with bulb out. Remove and replace the bulb (use the cloth to install the new bulb, don't touch it). Reverse for reassembly.

2002 GMC Yukon XL brake light replacement

Hello Weaver124!
Open the tailgate(s) completely and you'll find two phillips-head screws on the inside edge of the tail light assembly. Take out those two screws (keep one hand on the assembly when you remove the last screw) and the whole tail light assembly will come off of the vehicle. On the back side of the tail light assembly, twist and remove the light bulb housing for the blown bulb. The bulbs themselves on some models vary in the manner in which they are removed: (1) If the base on the bottom of the bulb itself is a *round* brass base, press down on the bulb then twist it to remove it, or (2) If the base on the bottom of the bulb itself is *flat* plastic, pull the bulb straight out of the assembly. To replace the bulb, simply reverse the order. Best wishes!

Tail lights do not work on a 2000 lexus rx 300 bulbs are fine, all other lights work fine

You may have a fried fuse. Look in your owners manual to find out which fuse it is in the fuse box diagram. If that is the problem make sure to use the same amperage fuse to replace the burned one with. I fried fuse is usually a sign that you have a short somewhere. But they can also fry for other reasons such as excess moisture somewhere. Sometimes they just burn from age and fatigue. It may solve it to just replace the fuse, but if there really is a short, the new fuse will fry too.

Tail light is burned out on tail light. I have the bulbs but can't figure out how to remove and replace burned out light.

  1. Check with your local auto parts store or look in your owner's manual to find the proper model number of the replacement tail light globe.

  2. Open your trunk or lift your hatchback. Find the cover just on the inside of your vehicle next to the burnt-out bulb.

  3. Turn the two latches counterclockwise to open them so the cover may be removed. In most cases you can turn the latches with your fingers; in some cases you may need a coin or a slot screwdriver to turn them. Remove the cover.

  4. Press the tabs that allow you to remove the tray that holds the tail light globes. There are four tabs on most VW models. Each tab must be depressed to release the tray. Pull the tray out a few inches, as far as the wiring allows.

  5. Press down slightly on the burned-out globe and turn it counterclockwise with your thumb and fingers. It should release easily and then pull straight out. Push the replacement bulb in and turn it clockwise until it locks in place.

  6. Snap the tail light tray back in place. The tray should simply push back into place and the four tabs should "snap" into their locked position. Replace the door cover and turn the door locks clockwise. Test your bulb to see that it is working.

Good Luck

Replacing tail light bulbs on 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Remove the two screws holding the tail light cover in place along the edge of the tail light assembly.

After you remove the two screws in the back panel, you have to pull the assembly out towards the side of the vehicle. You cannot pull it straight back from the trunk or you will break the pins that hold the lens cover onto the side of the SUV.

There are two pins that allow the light cover to be secured against the back of the truck. One pin is towards the top, the other pin is towards the bottom.

Twist out the bulb assembly.
Pull out the bulb
Insert the new bulb
Twist back in the bulb assembly
Place the pins over the pin holes in the light cover mold on the side of the truck
Push in gently Replace screws and you are done.
