Make sure master cylinder is full of brake fluid, then check to make sure rear drum brakes are adjusted properly. With rear wheels off the ground, truck in neuatral, wheels chocked, by hand spin wheel it should have a firm drag to it. If not they need to be adjusted.

When i press the brake pedal you can see bubbles in the brake fluid reserviour.

Have you been bleeding with a vacuum bleeder tool or the conventional way. A vacuum bleeder gets out more air provided that everything else is done correctly.Like the correct wheel sequence depending on weather you have rear wheel anti-lock only or four wheel abs.Refer to a Haynes repair manual.

The ABS light is usually a speed sensor problem and is a GM nuisance . it should not affect normal braking. It might be a booster for power assist problem, which will affect normal braking (expensive). Get rid of that old GMC.

I changed brake pads and shoes plus master cyclinder but still have soft brake pedal what else could cause this

Though a worrn out brake pad and shoe reduces the braking effficiency the proper setting of the hydraulics is very important to achieve a good brake.
All the four wheels must be lifted one by one and each of the caliper/shoe settings must be adjusted with the least play so that they act immemdiately.
Now the most important part is to BLEED OFF the air within the system. So with some one to assist you need to bleed the fuid while kicking off the fluid till the fresh fluid flows without air lock. repeat in all four wheels and the brake will become hard and tough.

Hi, you are experiencing the GM brake pedal, this is a common problem, most of the time the abs module is to blame. if air gets trapped in the module it will always be spongy. you need to crack the bleeders just after the abs unit and have an assistant push down on the pedal and do a "non-pressure" bleed on this to get the air out. then bleed the whole system all over again. good luck and buy brake fluid in bulk. I went through 3 big bottles before i got all the air out.

Our 1997 GMC Sierra locks rear wheels suddenly

More likely to be a rear end issue. If the brakes have been checked I would have your rear end checked. Could turn into a very dangerous situation.
