Question about 1990 Chevrolet Lumina APV

1 Answer

1990 chevy lumina 4 dr sedan. If you use anything electrical on the car without it running, it gets drained in less than 5 minutes and won't start. Yet you can have the radio on acc and it starts just fine. Also after the car has this issue, if you let it sit for at least 20 minutes or so it will start back up no problem. Or if you jump it right away it will remain fine. The battery was checked and it's fine so it's not that. I am baffled as to what is causing this. Please help???

Check voltage at the battery wiyh car running, If you have anything less that 13 V , suspect the alternator, Shoud be between 13.5 and 14.5

On electronic fuel injection pumping an pumping an pumping the gas pedal does nothing without the engine running ! Pushing the gas pedal to the floor will cause the PCM - engine computer to go into clear flood mode .

You have some very interesting ideas here , but not really how it works or is !

The vehicle will go into closed loop fuel control when the engine coolant temp reaches a definded temp an the O2 sensor get hot.

She would run for a couple minutes and die which is open loop when running, closed loop is when the sensors kick and it would die. Pulled spark plugs, they were black meaning no spark. Can only be 2

Black spark plugs indecate a rich condition , over fueled , wet spark plugs indecate no spark .

check egr valve for vacuum leak. pull hose from manifold. put hose in your mouth like a straw and **** on it. if the valve moves, then it's good. if it doesn't, you need a new egr valve. WARNING, they are fricking expensive! auto zone price $204. NO JOKE

Stop by your local auto parts store. Most of them have a hand-held code checker that can tell you what the problem is.

Assuming it will start again once it is warmed up, it is likely the battery is in poor condition/will not hold a charge. Unhook the battery once the car is running; if it continues to run, your charging system is probably OK, and the problem is likely to be the battery. If the problem continues after replacing the battery, you probably have a slow drain or short somewhere in the wiring harness. Best of luck on that one.
