How do i find number one location on a 1941 dodge flathead six distributor cap?

The only way I can think of right now is to remove the spark plug and turn the engine until number one piston is at top dead center. You may be able to use a piece of copper wie, about #14 or larger, to determine when the piston is a top dead center. You will then have to determine if both valves are closed. I have used a spark plug adapter with a supply of low pressure air to see if there is any resistance to air coming in. If both valves are not closed, rotate the engine 180 degrees and that should be the firing position for Number One. If you have not previously removed the distributor, the rotor will be pointing at the Number one position. Replace the cap and you should be able to determine the Number One Plug wire position.

How to replace a distributor

disconnect the cable from the negative battry terminal. position the engine with number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke this mean you can take number one spark plug out with the engine cool place your thumb over the spark hole and have some one turn the engine over and and feel the presure by your thumb when you feel pressure stop turning engine take the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing to number one spark wire in distributor cap if not you may have to turn the engine a little with your hand apply a paint mark on the edge of the distributor body directly below the rotor tip. also make a mark on the distributor base to the engine to ensure the distributor can be re-installed in exactly the same position as originally installed disconnected the coil wires from the distributor cap electrical connector, spark plug wires from the spark plugs remove the distributor hold-down bolt and pull out the distributor.

I took of*** my spark plug wires working on my small block 350 pickup and I don't remember the the firing order to put the new wires back on. Is there a diagram anywhere or is it even that difficult to...

Next time number each lead before you remove it and no. the dissy cap as well

The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.
On classic chevy small block engines that use ignition breaker points instead of electronic ignitions, the number one cylinder is the one immediately clockwise of the small metal sash cover on the distributor cap. The firing order starts here. There is no sash cover on the distributor cap for GM HEI electronic ignitions, and the firing order is the same, but starting at the 5:30 position.
The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.
See the diagram; Click to open a printable larger image in a new window. The firing order starts with the number one cylinder. We would connect the number one spark plug wire to the distributor cap terminal in the 6:30 position. distributor.pngSince the next cylinder in the firing order is 8 (passenger side rear), we connect the number 8 spark plug wire to the next distributor cap terminal (approximately 7:30 position) in the clockwise direction from number one. You need to be sure you continue the firing order in the clockwise direction around the chevy small block distributor cap from the last installed spark plug wire. Setting the rest of the firing order is just a matter of repetition. Be sure to count the spark plugs from front to back on each side of the motor to identify the correct cylinder number in the firing order.

Distributor cap and spark plug leads order/layout?

The firing order is 1342. The cylinders are numbered from left to right 1234. Depending on wether it is a 16 valve engine, the distributor cap lead number one position is at the front on the left, if its a normal 8 valve engine , the distributor cap lead number one is at the front pointing straight at the front. So, moving anti clockwise, the next lead will be number 3, then 4 , then 2.

Does a 1991 Dakota 5 2L have a crankshaft position sensor?

no it has a distributor here is the prodeure for the timing sensor under the cap.
  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal, disconnect distributor lead wire at the wiring harness connector.
  2. Release distributor cap retainers and lift the distributor cap off.
  3. Scribe a mark on the edge of the distributor housing to indicate the position of the rotor. Use the mark as a reference when reinstalling the distributor.
  4. Remove the distributor hold down bolt and clamp, and carefully lift the distributor out of the engine.
INSTALLATION

  1. Clean the top of the cylinder block to insure a good seal between the distributor base and block. If the engine has not been cranked with distributor removed, proceed with step 2. If the engine has been cranked with the distributor removed proceed to step 3.
  2. Position the distributor into the engine. Make sure the O-ring seal is in place on the distributor housing. Align the rotor with the mark previously scribed on the distributor housing. Engage the tongue of the distributor shaft with the slot in the distributor oil pump drive gear. Proceed to step 4.
  3. If engine has been cranked with distributor removed perform the following:
    1. Rotate the crankshaft until number one piston is at the top of its compression stroke. The mark on the crankshaft vibration damper should be in line with the "0" TDC mark on the timing chain case cover.
    2. Rotate the distributor rotor until it is positioned pointing at the number one distributor cap terminal.
    3. Lower the distributor into the engine, making sure the O-ring seal is in place. Engage tongue of distributor shaft with slot in the distributor oil pump drive gear.
  1. Install the distributor hold down clamp and screw and tighten finger tight. Install distributor cap and wires, making sure all high tension wires are firmly secured in cap towers.
  2. Connect pick-up leads and negative battery cable lead. Set ignition timing, refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for timing adjustment

1987 GMC Jimmy Distributor cap and Rotor replacement

A diagram may not be needed as its a reasonably easy fix to do on your own.the distributor ca p will only fit on properly one way because at the base of the cap locaters can only fit the distributor if they line up.When doing the spark plug leads do them one at a time and if nessecary write or mark leads as 1,2 etc .The rotor can only fit on one way but put a mark on the distributor to show where the rotor was pointing when you took it off and if it still points there when the new one is fitted. When changing distributor cap and leads they have to go to the correct place.Pays to mark the outside of distributor cap where the locating bits are On the new and old one.Fit the new cap and rotor then take a spark plug lead and fit to new cap 1 at a time. You can tell by lining up the marks on the outside of the distributor cap when you hold them one on top of the other.Good luck
