Re: Torque Specs for Head Bolts on 1997 GMC Sierra V8 5.0...
Install the bolts in sequence and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. The bolts must then be tightened again in sequence in the following order using a torque angle gauge. The short length bolts: (3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16) 55 degrees.Medium length bolts: (14, 17) 65 degreesLong length bolts: (1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13) 75 degrees.

The "pattern" for ANY cylinder head is pretty much the same...start with the bolts in the center of the head and work your way out to both ends. Torquing the cylinder head on your 5.7L Vortec engine to manufacturer specifications requires the use of a "torque angle" gauge, as well as a traditional torque meter.
The torque specifications are as follows:
> Step 1: All bolts: 22 Ft Lbs (30 Nm.) > Step 2: Short bolts: Additional 55 degrees; Medium bolts: Additional 65 degrees; Long bolts: Additional 75 degrees
Buy a gasket kit for the upper end. Remove the valve cover intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove the head bolts. Remove head and clean up block from old gasket material. Take the head to a machinist and make sure that it is not warped. If it is warped either replace the head with a new one or have it machined true. Install new gasket and get torque specs with new head bolts and follow torque sequence using the correct torque specs. Clean exhaust, intake and valve cover of old gaskets. install new gaskets and torque according to specifications.
Head Bolt Torque
For your 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (3.4L SFI DOHC):
Foot pounds (Final torque)
Torque sequence --------- | 6 2 3 7 | | 5 1 4 8 | --------- Step 1: torque in sequence to 33 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) thatpermanently stretch during the initial installation.New head bolts must be used when cylinder head isreplaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.
Foot pounds (Final torque)
Torque sequence --------- | 8 4 1 5 | | 7 3 2 6 | front --------- of engine | 6 2 3 7 | | 5 1 4 8 | Step 1: torque to 40 Ft/Lbs --------- Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) thatpermanently stretch during the initial installation.New head bolts must be used when cylinder head isreplaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.
Vortecs are a little different that old school small blocks, grab a Haynes or Chiltons, the cross patterns and specs are simply diagramed. Vortec, as any really, start with 25# then 45# and then final torque which I believe is around 70-75# but to be sure verify with the manual. AutoZones, Murry's, Adavance auto all carry the books, Cheap insurance.
