When turning on my Subaru Legacy outback 2003, the

When turning on my Subaru Legacy outback 2003 (at daily first start up), the battery lamp on its panel is lit & it's not turning off in the same time as all other lamps on the panel : it remains ''On'' for minutes (from 0 to 20 minutes), sometimes when giving fuel pulse (speed the engine) before running, it disappears. Noting that when this lamp lit, the ''Brake'' lamp lit also even if the Brake was down, and when it disappears, the ''Brake'' lamp disappears also. When turning On the car after arriving from a trip (when no lamps are On on the Panel), the battery lamp doesn't lit (like if the car is warm, this problem doesn't appear). Please help to solve this Problem as soon as possible. Many thx is advance.

The problem is most likely in the alternator or possably the voltage regulator of the alternator, it is an easy test to run and is done for free at most automotive stores, when the alternator is cold there may be commontator and brush contact issues. the test when it is cold is you can put a voltage testor on the battery and have the scar started cold. the voltage should not drop below 10v f it does have the battery load tested. as soon as the car starts then see if the voltage is around 14.3 or so, if it is below 14 then the alternator or regulator are bad. if it is jumping all over like ya know 12, 15, 7, 14 then the regulator is bad. have them double checked and replaced.

I just install the timing belt on my 2003 Subaru Legacy, following the Haynes instruction manual. The engine turns easy by hand turning, can I try to start before, install the radiator and all the other...

Yes, you can start it, but I think I would put the radiator back in first, there really was no need to take it out actually, just the shroud and cooling fans should give you enough room to get the timing exposed.

I've had the battery checked and is good. Is it likely to be the starter?

Subaru Outback - '03 boxer 2.5L engine sounds like a diesel

heavier oil if you are not in a cold climate. but before you do that have the oil pressure checked. We used to use a can of STP every once in a while on a motor in a dodge we had... nothing wrong with it... was just noisy.

My running lights will not turn off unless I unhook the battery.

Subaru Outback Legacy Flashing
Q. I have a 1996 Subaru Outback Legacy AWD manual transmission. the hazards flash when I turn the car off. I tried to reset the system by pushing the little black button under the drivers' side dash but it won't reset the system. I had problems with the brakes so I did not drive it for about two months and when I tried to start the car the battery was dead.
mechanic.jpg Now the brakes are fixed but the hazards won't quit flashing and the guy who repaired the car said I needed to reset the system by pushing the little black button. And I don't know if I should have it looked at, or change the battery, or if it is something very simple I can fix by my self.
Thank you very much,
Patrick
A. Patrick, you are the third person in the last two days that has come to me with this same exact problem under the same conditions. As of now I don't have any concrete information on this, but I believe the problem to be in the alarm system.
I believe the battery being disconnected or dying does something to the Anti-theft and Alarm System module and having a Subaru dealer reset the system will correct it.
If you do this and it works, please, let me know and I will pass the information on to the others.

Dear Mr. Ciulla,
I read your Q&A titled "Subaru Outback Legacy Flashing". I recently had the same problem on my 1996 2.5 liter Subaru Legacy Outback and your response is correct but I can give you a little more detail on what worked for me to stop the light flashing (which occurs sometimes if the battery had been dead):
There is a black reset button under the I/P near the anti-theft module.
  1. Turn ignition on
  2. Hold button 20+ seconds (door locks will lock/unlock 3 times)
  3. Turn ignition off
This also resets the key FOB so as step 2.5 you should also press the "lock" button on the key FOB before releasing the black reset button (door locks will lock/unlock one more time--do this with each key FOB you own). That's all!
The questioner in your Q&A said he tried the reset button; I suspect he either didn't turn the ignition on/off or didn't hold it in for over 20 seconds.
PS... pulling the door lock fuse will stop it temporarily if you can't get the above to work and have to take it to the dealer
Regards,
John
