If the sound isn't very bad and the oil pressure is with in normal range,it probably isn't anything to worry about ,That being said it could be dirty or week lifters or some wear on the bearings But if the oil pressure is good and the sound goes away after it warms up I would first try seafoam engine cleaner of free valve ,Can be bout at most parts stores, and added to the oil a short time be 4 the next oil change ,IF fore some reason it would git wheres the it may need a new lifter or bearings, PS see replacing lifters or bearings in a repair manual or take in for service..hope this helped.

How's your oil pressure on your truck? The only way to identify where the noise is coming from will probably require tear down of the engine to identify worn parts. But if you have weak oil pressure repairing the cause of that could help or solve the other issue, GL

Ticking sounds that are worse when cold usually indicate a lifter issue or valve train

Lifters require pulling the intake and the heads

2004 chevy impala problems

Assuming the engine oil level is normal, knocking would be lack of oil on the bearings and ticking would be lack of oil for the lifters and valves. I would be checking oil pressure next.

2008 oil leak and engine ticking

An engine used oil for lubrication and colling. If there is no oil then there is no lubrication. No lubrication means lots of heat and friction. Is it a ticking or banging noise? I do believe it is an ohc engine so it couldnt be a lifter ticking. It is probably a rod knocking. It so then it will more than likely need an engine

2001 PT CRUISER LOUD ENGINE KNOCK

If the check engine light is on, you should have the computer scanned for trouble codes.
If the engine really is knocking, and its full of oil, you may have internal damage.

I have a 2004 chevy 5.3 liter avalanche and it is making a ticking or knocking sound. It was taken to auto zone and connected to a diagnostic computer, they told me it was the knock sensor. My question is...

Does it only do it when cold? If so, this is "normal." Its b/c metal contracts when cold, and the tolerance of the way the engine is designed causes the "knock" but its normal and not harmful.

1996 grand prix 3.1 L when i first start engine the lifter ticks or the vale sticks till i get it on the road and punch it then it quits ticking what should i do

Are you sure it's a tick or is it more of a knock? There is a service bulletin on this issue from GM. Long story short, they tell you to replace all the pistons in the engine to fix it. BUT. This won't hurt anything and you don't have to fix it. I have this exact car. It's been doing this since it's had 75,000 on it. It now has 210,000 on it an is still doing it. It knocks when its cold till it warms up and the pistons expand. Then it goes away. Car still runs perfect.

Engine knock hard over 2500 rpm

Does the oil light come on or the knock occur during the engine warm up after a cold start?
There could be a couple of problems causing the issue. You could have an oil pressure pump or pump pressure regulator sticking. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and verify oil pressure at idle and 2500 rpms to make sure oil pressure is in normal ranges.
You could also have excessive piston rod bearing, crankshaft bearing or cam shaft bearing wear that will cause oil pressure to drop too low to prevent the rod knock your hearing at 2500 rpm.
You said a knock and not a ticking noise,so I don't believe a lifter is the issue at 2500 rpm.
Start with the oil pressure check and go from there.
Let me know.

2003 Mitsubishi Montero (full-size) check engine light is on, the engine sounds like it knocks as I accellerate and the shift diff. lights blink after driving 25 or 30 miles.

The engine is probably making a knocking sound because the oil needs to be changed or replaced. The check engine light is indicating that you will need regular dealership servicing soon, however you can still drive the vehicle but depending on mileage it will determine what services are required.

Knocking under valve cover on cold starts

Is there any smoke when you first start it? what is happening is the valve seals are probably worn and letting the oil seep past them. when your engine is first started it has no oil or very little oil at the top of the engine, thus causing the knocking noise. could be more but this is a most likely answer. oh and is you haven't changed your oil every 3,000 miles you had beeter start doing it.... answer knocking sounds usually come from bottom of engine try a better quality and correct viscosity oil
