I have an Isuzu Trooper, 1996, manual tranny. I have the axel (vacuum) engaged 4 wheel drive system (not the hub auto lockers) and shifter lever to engage 4 wheel drive. My 4 wheel drive is getting slower and slower to engage. I drive sometimes 5 miles or more before the light comes on showing engaged (switch on axle was replaced, wiring & switch appear correct). I have also noticed that if I switch off the car for 15 mins or more, like going for a lunch, when i start and drive away, the 4 wheel engages about immidiately if left in 4 wheel drive. Drive around in 2 wheel mode for a while and the thing gets doggone slow engaging again. I can tell it is not engaged as I have no problems making sharp turns in a parking lot, yet the whine increase makes me believe that at least the shifter lever engages the forward drive shaft.

On the transfer case?? That would be where the short '2h-4h-4l' stick goes into.

I have one or two solenoid looking contraptions on the axle right next to the actual sleeve engage diaphragm mechanism... vacuum hoses go there and electric wires go there too. This is NOT what u mean ?

I will look on the transfer case, thought there was only an electrical switch there

Tod light on in middle

There is nothing wrong with the system. When the TOD is in auto it will only engage the front wheels when the rear wheels lose traction. Newer small SUVs have just the opposite, they are in front wheel drive until they lose traction and then engages the rear. Isuzu was ahead of its time with the TOD system.

What's your problem?01 isuzu trooper 3.0L 4 wheel drive was working but its not now.the green light is on solid when ignition is on but when started and dash button pushed in the green light flash

have also had same problem, green light flashing on my isuzu trooper 3.0
check to see if drive prop shaft is engaged firstly, first step for front wheels engaging, then 2 more solenoids are under engine front of jeep, one coloured blue one grey, these work with vacuum, if i remember blue for engaging drive grey for disengaging, inside solinoids small tiny piston, could be stuck as mine was, can be taken apart & cleaned, reason sticking is moist in vacuum system, & not being used as 4 wheel drive until winter months, hope this helps

I have a 1999 Isuzu Trooper and when I hit the auto 4 wheel drive button it blinks and doesn't engage. The 4 wheel drive works fine. Any ideas what the problem maybe??

While driving, apply the foot brake and press the 4x4 button. If it engages, it can be bad auto locking hubs, or a bad torque converter. This is the same problem I am having right now but I was able to the get the 4x4 to work by doing what I described above. I am going to take off the wheels and check the hubs and eventually work toward the torque converter. I'll keep you updated.

1989 isuzu trooper right front wheel clicking and does not engage in 4 wheel drive (when all four wheels are in the air)

Check the automatic locking hub on the right side. BEWARE: You MUST have the appropriate special service tools for this job!!!!!

The vehicle will not engage in 4WD operation when the vehicle is off the ground, as the automatic locking front hubs require front wheel load to engage. When the hubs DO lock, it is normal to hear 2 to 3 soft clicks. Anything after that indicates a problem.

If memory serves, there is a cam bushing behind the plate that will wear out, and if the plate is worn out, the hub clicks and will not engage.

Change a cv boot on a 1996 isuzu trooper

First their are two different front axles in 1996 troopers. Isuzu changed the 4wd system from auto lock hubs to drive control axle.auto lock hube are on the older trooper's with the light and wiper switches on the dash. The same way to change both. Auto hub remove the six hex. screws slide off the hub remove the sirclip from the driveshaft. Newer hub has 6 alan-head screw's again remove them then the hubcap then the sirclip on the shaft and slide off the round spacer. Next 4 bolts from the lower balljoint and the brake's. Pull out the hub until it clear's the shaft remove the inner boot clips slide the inner boot out the shaft. Clean the grease from the end of the axle then with your fingernail feel along any of the 3 tracks in the axle and near the outer end of the track you will find a wirelike split ring slide a screwdriver under the ring and lever it off . Pull out the drive clean off the grease. You will see a sirclip on the end of the joint remove it and slide off the joint. You can replace either boot from that end. The outer joint is held on with a snap ring on the shaft inside the joint and is not easily removed need a hammer and drift to drive off the end and when removed its hard to get the snap ring on the shaft back into its place. You can change both boots from this end as well. Cheers
