I have a 2007 ford ranger, 6 cylinder. I drove 2-3 miles from home and began hearing a loud tapping sound similar to spark knocking but a lot worse, engine started losing power, erratically losing/gaining RPMS, only ran 1.4 mile to a parking lot and shut it off. Check engine light came on before I stopped. No smoke or anything. Had oil in it. Called friend who came and thinks its a valve problem. Will crank but engine runs awful with a constant tick/pinging sound like machine gun, engine also shaking erratically but it runs. didnt drive it home. You guys got any ideas on what this is and how much repairs may be? Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Remove the black connector to pcm . Check for corrosion pins . Then inspect the plug end for corrosion. I found moisture seep by the weather pack seal and wire on older vehicles.
With the engine at such low temp I suspect that the glow plugs in the head are not working. They are there to ignite the vaporised fuel in the cylinder and assist in starting. Have them checked out and replace if faulty
