Ensure parking brake is fully released.
Place transmission in Neutral.
Raise and support vehicle.
Tighten cable equalizer adjusting nut until rear wheel brake drag is felt when spinning rear wheel by hand.
Loosen cable equalizer adjusting nut until rear brakes are fully released.
Spin rear wheels and ensure there is no brake drag. Lower vehicle, and check parking brake operation

Jack up the rear wheels, fit safety jacks,Slask off the hand brake cable, press the foot brake a few times to center the shoes now adjust the shoes through the backing plate till the brakes lock up, then back off till the drums free,do both sides, pull the handbrake on three clicks, adjust the cable till the brakes just start to bind, release the hand brake and make the brake drums turn freely .

I am tearing my hair out as I have replaced all cables, brake shoes and had the drums skimmed but the hand brake still doesn't work any suggestions?

pull the drums back off and check how the hand brake cable is attached. pull the cable from the back and see if the shoes open out. It is possible to put the handbrake actuator in incorrectly so that the shoes do not move outwards when the cable is pulled. Next reassemble the drums and pull the cable again from the back and see it that stops the drum from turning. Check to see how far the hand piece comes out /up or down if it is a foot operated lever. In all cases correct adjust is around 3-4 clicks of the ratchet . If it comes all the way out check and adjust the cable at the hand ( if it has 2 cables to the handle or if the cable goes from wheel to the other and there is just the one cable up to the handle piece then adjust it where the single cable pulls on the one that goes to the back shoes

I changed the cables from the parking brake mazda protege 1999 and does not work properly

First make sure the brake shoe linings are ok and the shoe adjusters are free . slacken off the handbrake cable then adjust brake shoes ,then pull handbrake leaver on three clicks tighten cable to feel a slight drag at the wheels, release brake leaver and check wheels are free to turn.

Change handbrake cable

Hi Steve, The problem sounds as if it is the park brake adjustment or wear on the cable, (which may be binding inside the outer cover. This can be caused by a frayed inner cable and the ends catching). Try adjustment first and then only replacement of the cable. I have not carried out the job on a vehicle of this type, but replacement should be straightforward and logical. I'm fairly sure it will mean the removal of the center consul and disassembly of the brake activation levers on the parking brake shoes. Take some photographs or make some sketches before disassembling so you know how to re assemble. Regards John

How to adjust handbrake

Do check the rear brakes but below is some help as far as adjusting the cable the proper way. Per specs after all is done your parking brake should be correct as you pull up the lever after 4 - 8 clicks. Hope this helps....

Replacing the rear drums after the shoes are in. Don't seem to want to go on.

Sounds like the shoes are adjusted to far out, adjust the shoes in (closed) until you can fit the drum there should be just a slight drag when you rotate the drum.

How do i tighten the handbrake on my mitsubishi triton ute 1994 4wd

Hi,
Inorder to tighten it you need to check to see if the side that is not holding if the primary shoe that the handbrake cable pulls on. If not then you may need to adjust the adjuster at the shoe. It may be too far retractor so when the handbrake is engaged, the shoe is not coming out far enough to grab the inside of the drum. There is most likely nothing wrong with the cable. You just need to adjust the shoes. When you pull the wheel off and inspect the shoes, you will see if they are not worn. To use the adjuster, pull see it will be near the retainer spring, the spring will connect from the top and bottom of the shoes to retract them. On the top side, where the upper spring is will be the mechanical adjuster, where you can adjust out the shoes to make them grab accordingly when engaged.

Let us know if you were looking for something more else please accept the suggestion.
