I have recently purchased a 94 Mercury Sable with 77k miles on it. Its in good condition and ran great on the test drive. The day after i bought it I started getting a knocking. Its more like a rumble than a misfire knock. The dreaded check engine light comes on and off randomly. It still drives and once I accelerate the knock smooths out. The closest comparison I can make is similar to the sound of a car running out of gas. What could the problem be?
Either your carburator needs cleening or your distributor is off a little

94 sables dont have a carburator. but he is on the right track but frst off get your check engin light checked out evin if your light is out a good scaner can read history codes to put you at a good starting point

is the headlights switch set to automatic ? my mercury did the same thing one day and i found my daughter had drove the car and put the headlights to Off not to auto
It sounds to me like a faulty battery. I bought a battery from Napa for my 92 Sable. Did the same thing...ran all day..then it would die. Come to find out the battery was junk. Replaced that battery and I was good to go. Other than that, I would make sure allt he cable are tight and have the alternator tested.
