My VW Golf over heated, the engine cutoff in the middle of the road and now won't start. what could be wrong?

Could be a blown head gasket (bad) or a warped head (worse) or a completely toasted engine. Could be less severe , depends on HOW overheated it got.

If you over heated significantly the cylinders will expand and the engine will seize.

If seized it is dead.

It can get to a point where one cylinder seized and it will cause major problems with the crank and cams. Both of which are not something you can fix at home or have a quick fix solution.

There is a way to check if you are seized. Try turning the engine over using a wrench of ratchet on the crank bolt. The crank bolt will be on the lowest pulley on the back of the engine where the belts run. It is usually about a 19mm bolt.

Warning: turn only clockwise and never counterclockwise.

If you can turn the engine over it is not seized. If not you have a seized engine (sorry about that).

Start there.

Hope this helps.

Very fee vehicles have a fuel pump shut off...this was a ford thing for a while. Nowadays fuel shutoff is accomplished by the various computers communicating in the car.

How do you reset the timing on a 1998 VW Jetta?

a car of that year should have an ecu controlling fuel air mix etc. this normally controls the timing.
To reset the ecu on my '95 VW Golf disconnect the battery (negative / black terminal) for 15-30 minutes depending on who you ask. So I do 30 minutes.
If it has central locking make sure you don't leave the keys in the car when reconnect it. swich on the ignition without starting the engine so the dash lights up with the oil light etc. for 30 seconds then off for 10 seconds. then start your car. It will relearn so it will run a bit rough for a while but should settle down. take it for a spin on different types of road ie. slow and fast.

I currently have a vw golf gfi with the engine code of AWD. The car has no heat. I've also noticed the car doesn't get very hot. The temp gauge isn't in the middle where it normally is. I know my engine...

i would say no thermostat has been fitted or changed or the wrong type will cause this as well ,these vehicles have a housing at the front which is plastic and one on the side ,well the thermostat is behind one of them depending on model and the thermostat has two shut off doors so to speak and if yours only has one then this is because your mechanic thought they could get away with a different stat that they had laying around from an american vehicle ,yes it fits in the hole but it blocks one way and opens another then when engine is hot one closes and the other opens allowing the water into the rad to cool it

Vw golf 1.4 w reg wont start when warm bjust turns over ? when its cooled down after say 20 mins it starts an drives like there is nothing wrong

Sounds like it could be your coolant temperature sender thats faulty. It could be reading the incorrect temperature and sending the wrong signal to the ecu when the engine is warm.Sometimes even having the fault memory read will not show any faults in system.Try changing the sensor[located on the engine near waterhousing on side of head]and see what happens.Good luck.
