03 jetta tdi timing belt broke

03 jetta tdi, timing belt broke. Is the engine an interference engine, if so does that mean i bent the valves? Engine has 240,000+ miles, previously ran fine. What do you think is the cheapest route for repair?

Thanks for the help, yes the engine is an interference engine and the valves are bent. I removed the head and it's severely damaged. Any ideas for a re-man head cheap?

Take the head to a machine shop valves are not expensive head job costs 125 shaved cleaned valves replaced never replace a head just because the belt and valves broke only when cracked

Hi i have an afn engined passat .. snapped belt .. all its did was break the four hydraulic inlet valve lifters . the valves which run vertically with a large contact area ..all were in place .. put them in a lathe ..and a dial guage .. run out still within new tolerance ..all this at 240000 miles .. cost me 80 quid so far for the lifters and a top end gasket set

don't be too depressed sometimes its easy :)

That many miles a replacement new/used engine would be a better route in my opinion.

The number of miles is not relevant, because in 7 years of driving, obviously it was mostly highway miles and caused little wear.

It only takes about an hour to try just changing the belt. You need to buy a belt anyway. So it is always worth the attempt.
Most VW's have small depressions in the pistons for the valves, to prevent anything serious.

But no, I do not believe the TDI even is an interference fit.
Only the DOHC GTI engine was even close. I do not believe the TDI had a dual cam version, nor was any Jetta dual cam. And it is only with dual cam that the valves hit, because they are on such a hemisherical angle.

    Sorry to hear that.

My mistake is probably from the fact I don't do much diesel work, and diesels have much tigher compression chambers.

While I could suggest lots of inexpensive places to get a head, I am now unsure what to suggest?

If the head is that bad that you can't just replace a few valves, then I have to wonder about the pistons as well?

But here is a place selling new heads for $315.

Places like eBay can be good, as well as Craigslist.

I'm trying to buy a good vw jetta, I found one

Most VW are interferance motors. That would mean the pistons could have hit some valves. I would stay away.
Also have you seen the motor? I may be off but I thought the VR6's had a chain. Even if, its still an interfernce motor.

Is the 2.0 a interference motor.

The older ABA engine code is not an interference motor. If the belt broke at low RPM there should be no problems. I have replaced a number of broken belts with no problems, but have heard there may be issues at high engine speeds.

Timing belt broke did it bend any valves

This engine has been identified as an interference engine in which the possibility of valve to piston damage in the event of timing belt failure is most likely to occur, when repairing I would also replace water pump, due to pump is timing belt driven. On an 2002 VW Jetta TDI 1.9L engine, VW recommends timing belt replacement every 80,000 miles.

Yes this is and interference engine and will be damaged if you were driving when the belt broke more than likely.

Just broke timing belt on my 300zx,does thi

Yes your engine is a interference engine,
which mean valve to piston hit.

But replace the timing belt.
Possible you didn't bent a valve.
Depend on the condition when the T/B broke,

Let me know.....

Cambelt sliped or broken. does the valves bend.

what is the liter size of your engine? the 1.8L is an interference engine. generally all Audi engines are interference engines, and timing belt breakage can bend valves, the sure way to determine without detailed maintenance information, install a new belt, once the belt is on immediately run a compression test, if timing marks are good and compression fails, valves are bent.

1984 Nissan 300zx

the timing belt should be changed every 60,000 miles.
your engine is an interference engine, which means if the timing belt breaks or skips, the valves will hit the pistons.
if your belt broke you will have bent valves. so the heads will need to come off and bent valves replaced.
