This could be caused by poor gas, or intake and exhaust vanos solenoids, first try filling the tank with high test gas with low ethenol content,run through a couple of tanks, if still occuring your solenoids may be gummed up, they are located at the front of the cyl head and help in by 1 10mm screw, remove and blow clean with compressed,also be sure to change your oil more freequently than cbs indicator suggests.
If the check engine light is on- take it to the BMW shop or a Certified BMW mechanic to be fixed. The light won't go off even if you fix it yourself. It probably something minor like a heat sensor in the carburation system.
