2001 nissan frontier 3.3L extended cab
My idle started acting up (revving at 1200-2200 when in clutch/neutral and acting cruise controlly while in gear) at seemingly random times. Sometimes shutting off the engine and restarting it cured it temporarily sometimes it didnt. I reseached and thought it was the IAC, so I replaced it.....that didn't help.
Then I noticed that the set screw on the little temperature activated plunger/piston (for engine warm up high idle....you the one with the curved runner that sets the idle high for about a minute near the throttle body) was bent.......I bent it back and it seemed to maybe help a bit but not really.
also I had to set my normal idle at about 1100 in order to get a positive (0.79%) reading for throttle position on the scanner which I was told should always read positive.
also I was getting a knock sensor code coming up (relevant?)
any help getting my idle under control would be vastly appreciated!!!!
If the throtle position sensor is not set right or is going bad it will cause the problems you are having. it is VERY sensitive and will not adjust correctly untill moved and car is restarted. it will also cause erratic shifting in automatics. it will not always throw a code or turn on check engine light
If the knock sensor hears to much noise it will change the timing to get rid of any knock heard. if the sensor is going bad it can give false readings and randomly change the timing wich will in turn change the idle.
Check ur purge valve this controls idleling as well if its not working properly..on maximas its a mushroom type valve with 2 hoses facing same direction and 1 facing 90% degree
