Yes a bad water pump will definitely cause it to run hot. you'll probably be able to hear it as well as a whinning noise from the front of the engine. Also check for really low or incorrect fluid. jeeps are know for bad water pumps and leaky radiators. the heater pump is a seperate pump from the water pump. Also check for radiator fan opperation while the vehicle is stopped. If the fan is not coming on, it could be a fuse, relay, or intake air temp sensor.
you might want to check you cam shaft sensor amd also there is a different sensor under the distutor i had to replace both of these on my 95 jeep grand cherokee laredo
It's not an impossible job, but too long to write out instructions. I suggest that you get an inexpensive manual for your car (haynes is about $20) and follow instructions there. If you run into any specific problems, give me a shout! (just curious ...why are you changing the pump?)
