I havea 1987 k5 blazer. It ran fine until one day when I came home from work I parked it and when I tried to start it wouldn't turn on. I've replaced the starter and coil wire. Sometimes it starts right up but I keep having this problem that it cuts out mid drive. Today it started right up after putting the new coil wire on so I thought it was good to go. I drove it down my street and then I heard this winding noise from near the steering colum or underneath. The more I accelerated the louder the noise got. I decided to turn around and go back home when the engine totally cut out in the middle of the street. Now it dosen't start and the battery seems to be dead.
Make sure your battery is secured by a good battery hold-down system...if the battery shifts in the tray and the positive terminal touches the fender, the dead short will immediately kill the vehicle.
Also, take the alternator to a parts store and have it tested if your battery is held down firmly. The whining noise can be bad alternator bearings. On a vehicle of this vintage, this is a possibility for the noise. It is furthermore possible that the alternator has died electrically, and during a lengthy drive, the vehicle's own electrical consumption will drain the battery and the vehicle will die en route.
When you jump it off, it gets enough charge from the donor vehicle to drive, but if the alternator is dead, it can't keep the vehicle supplied with enough energy to operate.

The battery has held a charge and showed 12+amps, but when I drove it today and it died the battery was clicking like it was dead. It seems like it has been holding a charge but today it was kind of the opposite.

alternator is fine and battery wires are secure. Today it started up, idled for a few minutes and shut off. The whining noise only happens when I excelerate, not when sitting still.
Have you checked to see if it's having charging problems?
