Anytime you flat tow a vehicle it can damage the transmission. The output shaft of the transmission will be spinning, creating heat inside the transmission. Since the engine won't be on, the transmission pump won't be flowing fluid throughout the transmission removing heat from it. I don't THINK it will cause damage to the extent that the car will be un-drivable but damage can definitely be done if repeatedly towed. With rear wheel drive vehicles your able to remove the driveshaft relatively easy so as not to cause any damage to the transmission. However on a FWD vehicle removing the drive axles is a lot more involved and impractical.
