1990 Buick Century custom, 3.3 V6, 4 door automatic. I have replaced the linings, wheel cylinders, both rear drums on this vehicle. When the linings are tight to the drum the brakes seem to operate correctly. I have often experienced a "locking up" of the right rear brake. It seems as if the brake shoes become loose (out of adjustment).I have used the parking brake to try and "self adjust the rear linings as it is my understanding that this is how they work.Since I purchased the vehicle used I even ordered and compared the self adjuster (they were both correct). I'm surely confused. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear from you.

YOUR BRAKES SHOES NEED ADJUSTING THAT WHY ITS LOOSE.SEE YOU ADJUST THE BRAKE SHOES BY TURNING THE STAR WHEEL ON THE ADJUSTER SCREW UNTIL DRUM JUST SLIPS OVER THE SHOES.WHEN TURNING THE DRUM THE SHOES SHOULD NOT RUB IF THEY DO REMOVE THE DRUM AND BACK OFF STAR WHEEL A LITTLE BIT SO THEY DONT.

is ther a rear brake equaliser on the rear axle? this is usually spring operated that pulls up on the rear brake limiter depending on load in vehicle may be stuck in the vehicle loaded position when the vehicle isnt carrying much weight worth a look , just jack up rear end and look for spring device centre of rear axle attached to a device with the brake lines entering/exiting if there get vehicle as high as safe to do then put blocks under rear wheels then slowly lower jack and look to see if the spring device moves down with the vehicle if not this could be the problem as is exerting pressure to rear brakes so causing them to over heat keep me posted

1995 buick lesabre. brakes are gone! fluid leaking from left rear brake.

If they are drum brakes then it is most likely the wheel cylinder. these are not expensive but you will need to replace the rear brake shoes and clean all the parts with brake clean. I recomend replacing the other cylinder while your at it.

I would guess it is metric,as are most all bolts, except some large size chassis bolts, and have been since about 1983. You got rust issues also.

How do I replace a serpentine belt? 1990 Buick century custom, 4-door

It is quit easy just make sure you have the routing diagram there is usually a sticker under the hood. the belt tensioner has a cut out in it that fits a 3/8" or 1/2" drive ratchet to use as a lever.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
