Took 2000 new beetle to volkswagen mechanic because battery light would not go off, he said he put it on machine and could not find problem but gave me a new battery, still came on, changed voltage reg., still comes on, after driving it a while noticed battery starting to swell, changed battery again, again took to mechanic, then while car was there it starting running hot which it never did before I took it
to this mechanic. No one can seem to fix it.
Hi
There will be 2 fuse box's one main box with larger fuse's and the smaller internal one. Does your battery have a black box with wires running over the top of it? if not try and locate the larger fuse box and check all fuse's I'm not 100% but it should be a 75. VW's have a Control unit this is very often over looked by mechanics the part number is 3A0 919 506 and it should be located near to the water bottle, it has 2 small fuses with a plastic clear cover over the top. They can vary on position so please let me know what engine your car has?? If you can answer these questions and get back to me I may have another solution.
Regards
Dan
The second fan does not always work, but should if the car is over heating maybe the fault is the fan it's self. ask the mechanic if he put the battery on the wrong way to start with, may sounds silly but if he has put this on the wrong way then it will have ark'ed out and could have damaged the electrics to the fan.

The temp. light is coming on almost immediately,is there a fuse or a relay fuse that controls the heating & cooling fans, now neither will come on.
The temp light comes on immediately, and does both fans blades turn freely by hand- now one turns and the other will not turn at all- The temp light did not comeon before I took it to this mechanic.
Did it overheat? or just run hot? Te rad may be blocked but this would not cause the battery light, I would be looking at your fan circut, if the fan is faulty it may still work but can trigger the battery light. Let me know
