Never overheated (and still not certain I did) BUT Sat nite(Feb 6 2010) after a run about 20 miles the 2001 venture started to loose ground like it was runnning outta gas. HAd plenty. It was -10 C outside, heat not seeming to do more then warm up at #5 fan(Highest)fan setting and high heat. so she felt like she was stalling then died 1 min later. Would start, stall. and after holding foot to pedal down all the way I finally started her and she seemed to be better. But the 2 miles home dodging red lites to keep her going, she was "like missing" and almost stalling. Next day starts fine, but while warming up 2 minits engine revs hiugher then lower , then calms then rev highs to low, and this goes on. cannot see but a trace of orange dex-cool, oil recently changed, gas 1/2 tank, so cold you cant get the radiator cap open to take a look....any ideas???174,000K (canada) Engine lite on for years!
Re: Never overheated (and still not certain I did) BUT...
One of your intake manifold gaskets went bad and it is sucking in air where it should'nt be. This problem is very common on this motor. I'm 100% sure that is what it is. But no ofense if you can't figure out how to get your radiator cap off , then this job is probably a little much for you.

If you are adding anti-freeze every time this happens, you are still loosing coolant some were. I assume there are no puddles on the garage floor or where you park the van? Check the oil dipstick and make sure the oil is not a "milky"color. Check the passenger side carpet for wetness, you may have to pull it back.
If all of that is OK, you are still burning the coolant by way of the intake gasket or head gasket.
Good luck, let me know.
Regards,
I had the same issue with my venture. It turned out to be the number 5 plug wire, backside of engine ended up breaking out of the plug carrier and burning in half on the manifold. Your best bet is to trace all the wires to start off with and change the plugs. If that doesn't help, it may be internal. Good luck
