Yes. There is a very good possibility that your alternator is beginning to fail. The battery only starts the car and maintains nominal accessories. The alternator on the other hand actually provides the fire/spark for the engine after it has started o keep the engine running.
The light coming on and off is indicating the alternator is failing or falling below what is needed for the engine. When this occurs the system defaults to the battery, where it drains the battery. At higher speeds/RPM's the battery light is probably turning off - right?
A very easy way to check this is to start the vehicle, and with the engine running, remove the Negative (black) Cable going to the Battery. If the engine dies, it is the alternator and needs to be replaced immediately. Once an alternator fails, it will drain and kill the battery.
Sound's like your alternator is going out, if you have a voltmeter, with truck running check voltage at battery, that will be alternator voltage, should have no less then 13.5 volt's, if less bad alternator will need to be replace.also check belt tension pull on it if it feel's tie ok.
