Does it seem like the motor goes faster than the car if so than your clutch is slipping and in need of replacing, but if it feels like its holding you back then it could be the emergency brake is hanging up and slightly applied maybe the cable is frozen or something of that nature if so jack up car and spin wheels at rear to see if they are free wheeling, hope this helps you.

I have a 1996 pontiac bonneville 3800 and when I put it in drive to take off It will rev to 3000 rpm before taking off. It doesn't shift hard through any gears and seems to run fine after 20 mph.

Usually dirty transmission fluid/filter (no noises) You can try adding a full bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Stabilizer fluid...you don't need to drain anything...(could also just be low tranny fluid) Follow the instructions, warm tranny, motor running...add full bottle...manually shift through gears...The cost is about $11. even at Walmart...Hope this helps.

Check the shifter linkage to make sure nothing has slipped.

Change shift linkage on 93 sentra

More than likely it's not the linkage. Sounds like the fourth to fifth synchronizer is very badly worn, which will cause the shifter to "pop out" of fifth gear.

My avalanche won't shift

Sounds like a broken internal trany part. Take it out and shift it through the gears manually to see which gears work and where it revs up. The second and fourth gears are the ones that tend to not work.
