What does it mean when an automatic transmission slips gears?

  • Anonymous Jan 25, 2010

Sorry about the lack of information. Let me provide you with some. My car is a 2009 CRV which i've had for 6 months with approximately 6,800 miles on it. Way too soon for any type of mechanical problem right? Well, nearly a week after getting the car it seemed like every time or nearly every time I let off the accelerator the car would downshift, sometimes rather harshly. Honda described this as grade logic slowing the car down. I thought that only was on hills. About a month after that It would at times take the tranny bout a second to shift into reverse and drive. Which honda also did not seemed worried about but did not seem normal. And now when I shift from drive to reverse I will at times hear it hit into reverse when I used to never be able to hear it. Now also, I am able to feel every gear shift from 1st all the way through 5th. I know it is normal to be able to feel it shift rom 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, but not in 4rth and 5th. Honda has been of no help whatsoever. Do you have any advice you could possibly give me. If you need any more info please let me know!

Hello. Here are some of the transmission slipping signs you should be looking for:

  • A delay of more than a second in shifting from the neutral to drive or reverse gear, could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. If on changing from a neutral or park position to the drive or reverse gear, the car does not immediately catch the gear and move forward or backward, then it could mean a problem in the transmission.
  • If you change gears, and you hear a sudden clunk or sudden jolt or shudder, then the shifting is not smooth and there could be a problem with the gearbox.
  • If the engine rpm keeps increasing but there is no increase in the speed, then it could be a sign of the transmission slipping.
  • Another one of the transmission slipping signs is oil or automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leakage. This could damage the transmission.
  • If your car has suddenly started sounding noisy, then it could also be because of a problem in the gearbox.
  • Most automatic transmission systems, nowadays, have a check engine light or an OD light, which flashes if there is a problem with the engine. You will need a code reader to diagnose the problem by reading the code.

What you are describing is worn out transmission cluthes and probably a damaged torque convertor. Pull the transmission dip stick out. Look at the fluid. If it is pink it is ok, if it is brown you have a problem. If the fluid is brown and smells bad or burned the transmission needs rebuilding.

Nope. There is a drain plug on the transmission case. It is a simple drain and fill. Odyssey transmissions do not have a filter.

My 2003 cavalier automatic transmission slips in last high gear

The slip is likely always there you just feel it the most in top gear because that is when the most stress is on the clutch pack inside the transmission. You will need to have the transmission overhauled in most cases to correct this.

When do I use the d 5 gear in acura 2003 tl 3.2 liter

Pretty much all the time!

D3, D4, and D5 are all just *DRIVE* like on any automatic transmission, EXCEPT
that the number next to the D is the "highest gear the automatic transmission will go into".
The Acura just gives you a choice, in case you don't want to go into a higher gear (like if it's slippery traction or a steep hill, etc.)

1 means: Manual gear. FIRST GEAR ONLY.
2 means: Manual gear. SECOND GEAR ONLY.
D3 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 3rd gear.
D4 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 4th gear.
D5 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 5th gear.

Ihave a 1997 mazda protege and after having it for a week I noticed the transmission will slip when going into 3rd gear (automatic transsion) the fuid is brown and I was worried about really messing things...

.One of the most common causes of a slipping transmission is a low automatic transmission fluid level, also a dirty and/or clogged automatic transmission filter can impede the normal flow of automatic transmission fluid throughout an automatic transmission and cause the transmission to slip. Adequate, unobstructed transmission fluid flow is necessary for the optimal operation and function of an automatic transmission, including the function of the transmission bands and gears, two transmission components that routinely cause transmission slippage.Another cause would be faulty torque converter action and maladjusted transmission band.
