My 2000 Jeep Grand cherokee has death wobble. As i

My 2000 Jeep Grand cherokee limited has death wobble. As i drive down the highway and hit a bump the front end shakes like crazy. Not just a little shake but it feels like the front end is about to fall off. I recently put a 3.5 inch lift on it and the kit came with longer lower control arms. everything was installed to spec and the repair place is trying to get me to buy offset ball joints to try and get the caster down. 600 dollars later they say the problem could still be there. any ideas before i take the plunge and pay for it? by the way it only has 96,000 miles on it so the stock ball joints are still good. also i just put on brand new shocks and steering stabilizer,

I'm not sure how i'd add a second one....i've seen them on larger trucks but my jeep only has place for one.

Is it possible that one stabilizer shock is not enough to stabilize the front end????

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2010

Were there coil springs included with this lift kit??? If you jack up the front of the vehicle, and grab the tire from the very top and very bottom, can you have it move on it's axis? In other words, can you feel any movement while doing so??? Just to let you know, I responded to your question before I left for my other job, hoping that someone else would take over.

Anything from improper wheel torque, combined play in several otherwise "good" linkage components or bushings can play a part in death wobble. Changing the caster angle more positive is a good idea but you need to pay close attention to the pinion angle as you do that in order to keep the driveshaft from binding at the joint..Neither shocks or stabilizer will fix the problem though the stabilizer may serve to hide it for a short time. I don't see how it costs more than 400 to replace the ball joints though...Gold plated? 475 would be fair. Miles have nothing to do with how good the ball joints are. they need to be checked.
Alignment is critical as a height change alters front end geometry.
Good luck
