Hard downshift on that tranny ? means either your downshift cable is out of adjustment? or the shift solenoid shift pack has a faulty solenoid and or sticking servo valve or loss of voltage

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan will not shif into 2nd

Most likely the second gear section of the transmission has gone bad. There are 3 or 4 different gear sections or assemblies in an automatic transmission, when they go bad, they go bad.

Transmission

If the transmission is the 3 speed auto, just Dexron 2 or 3.If it's the 4 speed overdrive trans,it should use Mopar fluid(buy at the dealer) that is highly friction modified,or use Dexron 2 or 3 and LubeGard highly friction modified fluid supplement. The worst that can happen if these fluids aren't used,is harsh shifting, sometimes upshift shudder, and downshift bumps. These symptoms really don't damage anything, but are extremely annoying.
