I have the same problem - it is the central locking controller found under the passenger seat footwell carpet. If water has got into the footwell it will form a pool in the control unit. The connectors will rot after time and perhaps the unit PCB inside the non-waterproof casing may also be damaged. It is not easy to get at this - remove the glovebox and wrench away at the moulded carpet and see if there are signs of damage (especially you are aware of water ingress).
