I have a 2001 SL with manual transmition. The cable for the main shifting action came off the bottom of the shifter. It looks like the rotating insert that attaches the cable to the shifter broke. Is it...

Go to eBay and search for a saturn shifter bushing kit. these are less than 20 bucks, happens frequently on saturn. same kit fits all S series. if you can pull the console, you can put this in.
if you are in a hurry parts stores may have them in stock too.

Shifter dont work just moves around freely

get a saturn shifter bushing repair kit for about 20 bucks on eBay, takes an hour to install. if that does not fix it then you are looking at a new set of shifter cables which can be had at parts stores.

Broken shift cable on manual trans. how do unhook cable for shifter

pull the console out and take a good look at the bushings which connect the shifter to the cables. before you buy a shift cable kit take a look at a saturn shifter bushing repair kit at a parts store or on ebay, this is a very common problem on saturn S's 91-02 and often can be fixed with the 20 dollar repair kit. look on youtube for instructions on pulling the console, there are only 4 screws, and the boots to deal with.

I have a 94 saturn sl straight shift, the shifter dont catch gear it just moves around freely. what could be the problem?

If the shifter cable has broken (specifically the plastic loop) you can replace it with a new one from Ebay. Just look up "Saturn Bushing Man" and select the Shifter Cable Eyelet loop. It is a part that is $25 plus shipping. It is an easy fix. The other possibility is that the shifter bushing has broken. "Saturn Bushing Man" on ebay also sells a Delron Plastic Replacement or a Stainless Steel Shifter bushing replacement. Either of these will work as well and are only a $29 part. I have owned Saturns since 1997 and I had both of these parts go out on my 94 Saturn SL2.

2001 Saturn SL Manual Transmission stuck in 2nd Gear

I had this same problem with my 1998 SL2 after about 170,000 miles. There is a plastic bushing at the end of the shifter cable that holds the cable to the shifter - it probably broke. Remove the center console inside the car to access the bottom of the shifter. I checked my local Saturn dealer to find the replacement cables (come as a set) are more than $200. So I went to Lowes and bought a beam clamp and a large washer to hold the cable to the shifter. It has been working fine for more than 28,000 miles and cost less than $3

Hello:
NAPA sells the replacement bushing ($20) better than Saturns $200 to replace both cables.
Good luck

The shifter moves freely in the gear box like some linkage broke

If both cable ends are attached then the cable broke. Replace it.
