Battery is 4.5 years old. There's your answer. It's TOO old. It's very possible that the battery has degraded over the last year or so and has placed an overload on the alternator. The load killed the alternator.
The Ford dealer is probably right. Couldn't hurt to ask them why they think it needs an alternator, but that's my thoughts.
Bad batteries kill good alternators. Bad batteries kill good starters. Battery replacement every 3 or 4 years is good preventive maintenance. When I worked fleet, routine battery testing was done to prevent these expensive collateral repairs.
The battery life is near its end too. It can be the alternator, jump start your car, and remove the jumper cables, if the engine cuts out it is the alternator. If it keeps goind for a while and the battery indicator light is off, it is the battery.
