With that kind of symptoms you should be displaying a check engine light have the codes extracted and get back to me let me know what codes and I will give you a better idea of what is wrong with your vehicle.
Ok so you say there are no codes so going only on you posted your engine has 292k miles could be it has jumped time with that many miles on it check the timing on it And get back to me.
PS the rust on the rotor is normal and would have nothing to do with it other than its been on there for a long long time.
You can do a leak down test on your cylinders.

Engine stalling and rough run
issue at low speeds
This problem
is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and
throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use
carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC
chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is
running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the
speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and
blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the
negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If this doesn't improve the problem you have mechanical problems in the engine like a low cylinder die to worn rings or leaking valve seats.

No codes are showing up on the dash.
I also noticed when replacing the rotor button, that the button was hard to get off as it appeared the inside of the distributor looked a little rusty. Not sure if this is a ignition type issue or might be a bad valve in a head.
ok, i'll work on that later. How would a burnt valve show up?
