I have two codes come up when checking why my check engine light is on. P0447 and P0420. Any info on what these mean and what it takes to fix so I can pass my smog test??

press the helpful button
Definition of P0420 is catalyst below threshold. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). Catalytic converters are not normally a "wear" type item, that is they are not deisgned to wear out and need replacement. If they have failed, it is likely due to something else that caused it to fail.

P0447 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Open. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an open within the circuit that controls the vent valve or solenoid for evaporative emission systems vapor.

My service engine soon light came on in my 2002 ford explorer what can it be?

The service engine soon/check engine (yellow light) comes only when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system you will seldom feel the car engine run any different, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

1998 Nissan Frontier Serice Engine Soon Light Problems

Auto zones computer **** not trying to be rude but Im not to fond of there $99 diag tool. Anyways have you tried the dealer, to see if maybe your light may just be a computer glitch or doubtly a maint. light going on and off. Its to bad its not reading it as a hard code. but you could go buy a repaire book and see if it can tell you how to use the OBD II to make the codes flash when the light is on. just a thought for you.

Check engine light

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The light being on could be related to the gauges not working, First step is to find out what codes are present.

2002 frontier v6 code 0455 evap leak large i put new fuel cap on anything else it might be

Of course it can be other issue's, but this code is most likely the fuel cap, erase the code and drive it until the systems goes through a complete drive cycle test, about 30 miles of varied driving, freeway, low speed and stop and go, if the light doesn't come back on u are home free.
My background is 20 years of electronic engine and emission control field experience and a certified smog tech for both test and repair of all car and truck lines.
