I am having a problem with the 4x4 on my 91 jeep wrangler. It has a 4.0 liter strait 6. Whenever I shift it into 4x4, every 8 to 10 seconds I feel a thump as if is it is popping out then back into 4x4. Occasionally I can see the 4X4 light blink off when it thumps. I changed the shift motor on the front axle but there was no change. I don't know where I should look next. I have suspected a problem in the vacum hoses but most of the hoses are inside wire bundles making it a bit tricky to trace the lines. Any suggestions you have will be helpful. Thanks

You can take apart the CAD vacuum assembly on your front dana 30 and install a 1/2 inch bolt to lock the inner and outer stub shafts together. That will solve your problem. The vacuum actuated system sucks, to be kind. Or like this joyellowhors says and get an aftermarket one piece shaft.

My Wrangler had the same problem, it ended up being a vaccum leak on the front axle shift motor. It is located in the middle of the front passemger side axle tube.

I have a 1987 jeep wrangler and it will not shift into 4 wheel dr

The front axle connects 4wd by vacuum. check the vacuum hoses that run to the actuator. Pay close attention to the vacuum hoses running underneath the battery as battery acid can eat thru those hose easily. Good Luck.

4 wheel drive doesnt work.

Has this Jeep been modified at all?
It sounds like the shifter cable was reinstalled backwards.
Specifically the 4-Low "Not Climbing Well". 4-Low should give you the best torque and hill climbing ability.
Do you feel any "Binding" in the steering wheel (difficult to turn)?
Remember a Jeep uses real driveshafts and differentials to give you 4WD - you cannot engage 4WD or 4-Low on dry hard surfaces. It needs a little bit of slip between the wheels for turns.
Check you're fluids too.

1998 Jeep wrangler s/spot stuck in 4 wheel drive

This sounds like the linkage could have fallen or broken off. Have someone move the 4wd shifter while you look under the vehicle.

Trouble shifting into 4 wheel drive

The lever is hooked up to a cable system that hooks into each type of drive. It could be that the wire hook end is missing the notch to engage in 4x4 and passes it instead. You can get easy access to it directly underneath the shifter under the jeep.
