Engine was ticking for a few days then moter was real load engine light came on,we started it today,was not as noisy, but after awhile we saw something was glowing red hot behind the moter by the catal. converter

1. Drain 1 quart of oil.<br />2. Pour in a can of engine cleaner.<br />3. Run engine for 5-8 min, to run cleaner throughout engine.<br />4. Drain engine oil ( oil will be real black and warm)<br />5. Install new oil filter<br />6. Use 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer in place of oil.<br />7. Pour in 1 bottle of Lucas fuel treatment into gas tank.<br />8. Drive for a couple of days and see if it goes away or gets lighter.<br />
Well,you may have an oil leak,but #2 missfire may mean a few things.
Pull #2 spark plug and see what's up.
be sure you are getting spark to #2.
Check for a vacuum leak,also.
the ticking noise will be from a faulty relay and will not be covered by codes. At best you will have to locate the clicking relay and replace it . IT will have something to do with the interior lights ,door switches and may be the light control module.

It sounds like it could be a bad coil pack that is used for number 5 cylinder. It could also be a bad spark plug wire. Does the weather seem to make a difference? Try this quick check once night time comes around. Open the hood and start the engine. Fill a bug sprayer with salt water and spray the plug wire while the engine is running. If the wire is bad, you might notice an electrical arc from the wire to the engine block. The engine will probably start running rough. If this occurs, then the wire should be replaced. I would check to see if the catalyic converter is clogged. Drop the tail pipe at the manifold. Start and drive it for a block you will be able to tell real quick. It should run smooth and have good power. It will just be noisy. Or you could have coil problems.
This is a common problem of Volvo S40. You can try this trick to turn off the flashing arrow light.
1) Turn off Engine
2) Turn key to "On" position (Not start the engine), you will see the panel light will on
3) Step on the break paddle
4) Shift the gear from "P" to "L" 10 times
5) Turn key to " Off" position
6) Now you can start the engine.
7) If doesn't work, you can repeat the procedure.
