The front of the handle has a large "U" clip. Use a screw drive and pry the clip out. It's a lot easier to do when the shifter is pulled all the way back to "1" or "2" but is doable in park still. The handle will then pull up. There will be a plastic piece in it that pushes down to release the lock in the shifter assembly. If when you push the plastic piece down it doesn't release the lock you will have to remove the shifter cover and take a look inside, to see what broke. It may require replacing the whole shifter assembly. You should be able to find the complete assembly used for fairly cheap.

On the front of the handle facing the dash there is a pin thing you slide out with a small flat head screwdriver should come out pretty easy, then you can just pull the knob upwards. Most likely what has happened is there was moisture somewhere and was making it seize up. The internals are plastic to much abuse and they break you will most likely need a new assembley which is bad to replace but taking the knob off lets you stick a screwdriver in the shifter arm and you can still drive the car till you get a replacement one.

I have a 05 Pontiac gto with a short shifter , that I recently just got back going and it won’t go into reverse

Just lengthen the linkage. With shifter set in park, remove the linkage from the trans lever and push the lever into park. With the shifter in park, lengthen the linkage to where it will connect to the lever, your done once the safety clip is in.

Truck won't shift into gear

Oh, boy - this could be pricey!! Either the shift linkage came apart or the Transmission went bad. Find the shift linkage rod coming through the firewall and follow it to the transmission. Check for connection to the trans and if the grommets are good. If both are good, then you'll need to get it to a transmission shop to be investigated. If no Linkage rod, then your trans is 'wired' meaning it is electronically controlled, and the shift solenoid ( or other component)is bad or has a bad connection. If this is the case, locate the shift solenoid on the side of the trans and inspect the wires - if any are burnt or lumpy, that would be bad and need replacement.
Hope this helps!!

Pontiac sunfire shifts into other gears but wont engage

First, check transmission fluid level, if low may not be able to pump, may need trans filter and fluid change.

Wheres the overdrive unit and how do i test it?

I'm guessing automatic trans. look at the end of the shifter handle there should be a button on the end . if you press it a yellow light should come on saying OD OFF . and the engine rpm should increase when driving, meaning the trans came out of OD. press it again and trans will go back into OD and light goes out.
hope this helps.

Shifter locked up (% Protege

Yes under the hood on the trans is the linkage. Pull that off the trans (should be a clip) and move the lever it was on. If that is stuck it is the trans.

02 gmc allison tran. wont go into tow-haul mode

THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF PLOBLEMS WITH THE SHIFTER HANDLE/SWITCH. THE BEST WAY TO VERIFY CONCERN IS USE A DIAG. SCANNER & VIEW TRANSMISSION DATA DISPLAY WHILE ENGINE RUNNING. THE SWITCH IN THE SHIFTER IS FAULTY. IF YOU SEE NO INPUT CHANGE WHILE DEPRESSING SWITCH THIS IS YOUR CONCERN.
