You do not say what design 3 series; but for E36 with electric seat adjustment, Odometer Gears (link below), makes replacement gears for the electric seats for approximately $40 each. This is the part that typically wears/breaks for seat reclining. The model noted is an older 318is, (the E30 model), but since it is the exact same engine, the guide notes the changes with your model year BMW. Note that if you are ever looking for information for your BMW, generally info online is found under the internal model code.

After failing to enter the correct code in 3 successive tries, you must leave the key in the "ignition on" position with the radio on. This will allow you 3 more tries to reset the 5 digit code. If you enter an erroneous digit, you must complete the 5 digit code, even though it is wrong. You have 2 more attempts to enter the correct code. Charlie
